I couldn't agree more. I also have an addiction to this mirror you speak of. When it comes to road riding that is the only helmet I am comfortable wearing. There are many reason as to why I did not want to ride a bike in the streets of Las Vegas, but the fact that I did not have the helmet with the mirror is the main reaon.
And you mentioned racks and bags. Yes those are also a wonderful addition to the world of commuting. The prefered way to ride if you ask me. No more pain in the neck and back.
Speaking of dorks, I might be considered the queen of that. Not only am I riding with a rack, panniers, and a helmet with a mirror on it, I am also a bike messenger. You can only imagine what those fellow messenger think of me when they see my set up. Most of them are out there with the fixed gear, messnger bag style. To each their own and that is not the way that I roll. I prefer the live and learn method.

 Right on.
