Since most races have some sort of “swag raffle” at the awards ceremony, my plan is to have race promoters agree to issue one raffle ticket per empty gel packet turned in after the race. This would encourage racers to hang onto the spent packs, and redeem them for a shot at prizes. It would also encourage back-markers, and enterprising groms, t o sweep the course ISO accidental packet drops. Just to make it fair for those who reduce waste by using refillable gel flasks, award two raffle entries to anybody producing a refillable gel flask.

I could see eco-minded companies (or even the gel companies themselves) signing up as title sponsors of the “gel pack raffle”at various races, to score some goodwill for helping to eliminate the litter problem.

Yeah, it’s a shame that we need to come up with incentives for good behavior that our mothers tried to teach us long ago, but let’s do whatever it takes to clean up the trails.
