Conventions Bike Project

Posted: August 4th, 2008 by Karl Rosengarth

Delegates, party officials, and the national media attending at the Democratic and Republican national conventions later this year will have the opportunity to borrow free loaner bikes to use during the events. Bikes Belong, in partnership with leading health insurance provider Humana, will bring 1,000 bicycles to the Democratic National Convention in Denver, CO, August 25–28 and another 1,000 bicycles to the Republican National Convention in St. Paul and Minneapolis, MN, September 1–4. Bikes Belong hopes that the loaner bikes will showcase bicycling as a healthy, convenient transportation option for short trips. The bikes will also be available to the general public.

Bikes Belong will provide a staff of several hundred volunteers to operate multiple bike stations between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. during the conventions. Volunteers will serve as bike station attendants, bike ambassadors, and mechanics.

A long list of Bikes Belong members are contributing to this project. Fuji, Giant, Raleigh, Schwinn, Specialized, and Trek are providing bikes. Erik’s Bike Shop, Penn Cycle, and Park Tool in Minnesota and Bicycle Village in Colorado are helping assemble the loaner bikes. Bell Sports and Trek will supply helmets. OnGuard is donating locks. Pedros and SRAM will provide onsite technical support.
