Dirt gets in the folds

Posted: December 5th, 2007 by Pinchie

Despite being the object of some opprobrium, the “Hummer Tactical mountain bicycle” was actually commissioned by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in 1997, though it was called “the Paratrooper.” (Which actually brings some vivid fantasies to mind: For your next vacation, why not parachute with your folding bike into Chamonix?)

Of course, most of those car-branded bikes will get you laughed off of your Wednesday night ride. But what’s your favorite (respectable) full-sized folder for offroad use? Personally, I’m a big fan of the Ritchey Break Away, and an Indie Fab with S&S couplings has been on my Christmas list for about a decade.

The Hummer? Not so much.
