Dirt Rag Launches New Title: Bicycle Times

Posted: October 5th, 2008 by Karen Brooks

The staff of Dirt Rag Magazine is proud to announce the start of a new venture, called Bicycle Times. This new magazine will focus on the pavement side of the bicycle experience—from commuting, to touring, to riding with family, to pedaling around for the heck of it.

The Big Cheese himself, Maurice Tierney, explains: “Bicycle Times is a natural progression of publishing Dirt Rag Magazine for 20 years. Our devotion to the rotating mass of the bicycle wheel extends from the dirt to the pavement.”

The first issue of Bicycle Times will be out in March of next year, and the rest will follow quarterly. The accompanying website will be out sooner than that – watch this space for updates.

This new magazine will operate with the same Forum premise as Dirt Rag, so if you’re interested in contributing, email your queries to Karen at editor@bicycletimesmag.com.

We here in the office are excited to have an outlet for the “other side” of what we love to do, and to help people discover how to ride for transportation, their own health and the health of the planet, and of course just for fun. Ride on!

I’m way too excited to wait until march, but i guess i’ll just wait. I just hope it doesn’t detract from dirt rag which is kind of nice in its showcasing of some slightly less-than-ordinary mountain bikes like the big dummy review from a little while back. still, way cool…i’ll subscribe.

Sounds good to me. I know you won’t be like the other generic roadie mags, and that will make Bicycle Times a very cool rag. Karen, you rock, girl!

Great – Great timing. At a time when we are getting fat and as a consequence losing our health and wealth we need to band together to share and support each other..Rise up, clip in and feel the warmth and wind in your face as we ride off into our future, We can do more one by one as we become many, the spokes of our country which will balance our world and future. Good job – thank you for taking the lead and be aware that a peloton will follow and from time to time push you and your magazine. It’s all good!

That’s really cool. I don’t do nearly as much road as I do mtb but I’m very interested to see your take on the road scene. Definitely looking forward to it.

o.k.–all comments thus far very positive, & of course i hope the best for DR, however i am VERY skeptical of this new “venture”. to my mind, the marketplace is already flooded with such offerings, in one form or another…
take “Bicycling” for example. it already covers “commuting, to touring, to riding with family, to pedaling around for the heck of it.” & more–& for only $10/year! yes–the automobile advertisements suk, but whatever, that’s how they do it for $10/year. another one is “Bike”, which is pretty decent, & the list goes on.
    my questions/concerns are:
    1. it will likely pull resources from the core of DirtRag like staff & money.
    2. i like the way subject matter is currently covered by DR (see next point) & i am not subscribing to any new bicycling mags; one is enough.
    2. is this really necessary? it seems DirtRag already “help(s) people discover how to ride for transportation, their own health and the health of the planet, and of course just for fun.” this motto is (ALREADY) embodied in every issue of DR: “stuff reviews”–which addresses cargo racks/trailers, lights, equipment, accessories, apparel, & so-on; & it seems to me the bike reviews hit all bicycles except (true) road/race-bikes & BMX bikes. DR reviews highlight commuter bikes (Salsa Casseroll, etc.) cross-bikes, & off-road bikes.
like i said, i certainly i hope the best for DR, but i’m REAL skeptical of this. let me also mention a couple things i really do like about DR:
    1. it does NOT come every month! with two kids, full-time job, time spent riding/maintaining two bicycles, home-owner, etc. i don’t care to be “rushed”/bombarded w/magazines every month; its just not that urgent!
    2. its “feel”. nice heavyweight pages & good colors.
    3. the “Beer Me” column.
    4. down-to-earth commentary, features, & columns.
    5. the advertising is specific to the objective of the mag; i.e., no Chevy Tahoe ads.
should you proceed w/BT, may i suggest you send the first issue out to all of your existing subscribers so they can see for themselves just what sets “Bicycling Times” apart from “all the rest”.
