o.k.--all comments thus far very positive, & of course i hope the best for DR, however i am VERY skeptical of this new "venture". to my mind, the marketplace is already flooded with such offerings, in one form or another...
take "Bicycling" for example. it already covers "commuting, to touring, to riding with family, to pedaling around for the heck of it." & more--& for only $10/year! yes--the automobile advertisements suk, but whatever, that's how they do it for $10/year. another one is "Bike", which is pretty decent, & the list goes on.
my questions/concerns are:
1. it will likely pull resources from the core of DirtRag like staff & money.
2. i like the way subject matter is currently covered by DR (see next point) & i am not subscribing to any new bicycling mags; one is enough.
2. is this really necessary? it seems DirtRag already "help(s) people discover how to ride for transportation, their own health and the health of the planet, and of course just for fun." this motto is (ALREADY) embodied in every issue of DR: "stuff reviews"--which addresses cargo racks/trailers, lights, equipment, accessories, apparel, & so-on; & it seems to me the bike reviews hit all bicycles except (true) road/race-bikes & BMX bikes. DR reviews highlight commuter bikes (Salsa Casseroll, etc.) cross-bikes, & off-road bikes.
like i said, i certainly i hope the best for DR, but i'm REAL skeptical of this. let me also mention a couple things i really do like about DR:
1. it does NOT come every month! with two kids, full-time job, time spent riding/maintaining two bicycles, home-owner, etc. i don't care to be "rushed"/bombarded w/magazines every month; its just not that urgent!
2. its "feel". nice heavyweight pages & good colors.
3. the "Beer Me" column.
4. down-to-earth commentary, features, & columns.
5. the advertising is specific to the objective of the mag; i.e., no Chevy Tahoe ads.
should you proceed w/BT, may i suggest you send the first issue out to all of your existing subscribers so they can see for themselves just what sets "Bicycling Times" apart from "all the rest".

That's really cool. I don't do nearly as much road as I do mtb but I'm very interested to see your take on the road scene. Definitely looking forward to it.

Great - Great timing. At a time when we are getting fat and as a consequence losing our health and wealth we need to band together to share and support each other..Rise up, clip in and feel the warmth and wind in your face as we ride off into our future, We can do more one by one as we become many, the spokes of our country which will balance our world and future. Good job - thank you for taking the lead and be aware that a peloton will follow and from time to time push you and your magazine. It's all good!
