I must have changed a thousand flat tires. I hate patching them, the way my road biker dad showed me when I was a kid. I usually go on long rides without a spare tube, patch kit or pump. I've walked twenty miles home too many tiimes. When I bring all that gear, I never get flats.

My second mountain bike, an old Diamond Back Topanga, never had a flat. I bought it used ten years ago and rode it all over California, worry-free. I figured it must have thornproof tubes. It weighed a ton. I rode it into the ground, and finally I removed the tires. Dig: thornproof tubes, with tire liners AND green slime in the tubes ! I'm rebouilding the bike as a singlespeed; new rims and tires, but I'm gonna use those old tubes.
