Well first one has to understand, this race is held in France. That says a lot. Dont want to get any deeper then that. No to big on politics. Next the cycling world is changing so much it is almost sick. I for one just about get tired of racing becuase of all the B.S. As for your view on the race well I think it would be awsome but it will never happen. Thats like saying all boxers should train like ROCKY, instead of at a gym. Or get rid of all the heart monitors and crazy training junk and just ride. I think I might use a heart monitor when Im old and have a bad heart LOL. Well over all good idea, but our world is built on easy, help ME and how can I WIN!! I wonder could some of those guys even change a flat??

Have you considered trying Audax rides (Randoneering in the US I think).
You get long unsupported rides with organised rest stops at distances from 50km all the way out to 1200km plus.

They're very sociable, the emphasis is on self-reliance and the routes are usually very pretty. Those who want to ride them fast are free to do so of course, but there are minimum and maximum time limits to encourage riders not to.

The Paris Brest allows 90 hours to cover 1220 km. That's about half the distance of the Tour in just over 4 days!

I think the Rapha Continental guys ($500 kits aside) have the right idea--gentleman's races over mixed terrain. Granted, they aren't entirely self-supported, but it's a start...
