Ahh, yes I'm a freak and you only know HALF of what a freak I am. Issues. ;)

Man, a Ohiiopyle to J-Town would be sweet. Make it the LHT of the mountain bike world. I know I've done some rides this year combining roads, rail trails, and ghetto single track that have been pretty sweet. The rail trail can really help one get from urban decay out to the crap roads of PA safely and easily. Glad to have 'em.

Thanks for the feedback, gentlemen:

jhl99, I agree that western PA is a leader in the rail-trial initiative. Lots of abandoned rail corridors and untapped routes out there (many I've scouted myself). Thanks for the tip on the Apollo-Saltsburg-Blairsville-Blacklick-Dilltown-Nanty Glo-Ebensburg link. I may have to research that route and give it a try.

jmahokey, you ARE a total freak (just kidding). Well, I see no reason why rail-trails can't at least be connectors to epic singletrack routes, for a great "combined" trail system. For instance, the idea has been kicking around for a mountain bike route from Ohiopyle to Johnstown area. Who knows what the future may hold!

Great post Karl! I admit I've poo-pooed the rail trail in the past. This year I got a new respect for it. I live not far from the Boston trail head, so it's been a great way for me to get some long miles in, at a steady tempo and just "Zen out". I love the variety of folks you see out there one every type of bike imaginable. Sometimes I'm like "look at that freak!" but knowing full well that I AM THE FREAK cruising along in full lycra/spandex, helmet, glasses, etc., Meanwhile some shirtless/helmetless dude on a 1989 Huffy just knocked out 100 miles with his bar ends turned up in the air.

Again, great post!

Jason

p.s. now if we could just get a SINGLE TRACK version of this trail system!

Great Blog entry!

Everyone can enjoy a ride on a rail trail, no matter how experienced or inexperienced of a cyclist one is. Many Friday evenings, when heading to Western MD, I will stop the car at Connelsville, and take an out and back ride from Connelsville almost up to the bridge over the Yough near Ohiopyle.

My dad (active at 78) makes use of the Allegheny Highlands Trail out Meyersdale or Frostburg, and sometimes we ride out of Cumberland.

Western PA must be ground zero for rail trails... a dividend from our industrial past. My favorite is the Ghost Town Trail.. Dilltown to Nanty-Glow section. There are some work-arounds, but you can go Apollo-Saltsburg-Blairsville-Blacklick-Dilltown-Nanty Glo-Ebensburg by connecting a few rail and canal trails and navigating some road sections.

Image the trail system in another 25 years!
