View Full Version : Bike shipped scratched what to do
What are your thoughts
I purchased a new bike and it was shipped to me and on the inside of the box something must have come loose and put about a 3 inch scratch in the seat tube about half the way up from the bottom bracket:mad:
this scratch has gone through the clear coat and the paint.
the seller is telling me I have to make a claim with ups but the exterior of the box appears to have no cuts or holes
Should I take action with paypal or ebay
Just throwing it out there
I know I should have bought from my local LBS but they no longer had the size that I needed

talk to UPS first, if they don't replace it, go from there.

ummm, just ride it...
ride it like hell without fear of marring its pristine finish. ride it as a crazed fiend, slaughtering lines that used to make you quake...
just a suggestion.

that was going to be my suggestion if UPS said no. My bikes get scratched pretty quickly just from being used.

If the scratch was caused by something loose inside the box, UPS will walk away from that damage claim and blame it on the shipper's poor packaging. If there's no visible damage or an indication that the box was dropped or tossed a great distance to knock something loose, or pierce the box then UPS just won't care.
You could try to get into a pissing contest with the seller but the odds are they aren't in a position to help you if it was a private sale. If it's not bent or dented there won't be much room for compensation.
Might be time to buy a Dirt Rag decal (http://www.dirtragmag.com/merch/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=5&products_id=38) and cover the scratch and ride the wheels off the bike until you put your own scratches in the paint.

What he said, duh! It's a weapon, not a jewel.

Ask the seller to credit you (via PayPal) the cost of the shipping (40-60 bucks or so). If they don't agree, and there are no obvious signs of damage to the packaging, then file an incident with PayPal or eBay, but first try to work it out with the seller.

Seller's passing the $...UPS won't care and will deny any claim forcing you to sue them. I've seen this scenario before with bows.
Clear over the scar, slap a decal/sticker on there and ride that beeyawtch. Seriously, how many dirt-ridden bikes have you seen with no dings/scrapes/scratches? It ain't a roadie.

I see how bike boxes are handled by shipping agents every day, and I am surprised that MORE bikes/frames aren't damaged going across the country. Be thankful it is ridable. ;)
Unless the bike was just thrown in the box with no padding whatsoever, then just walk away. If the frame was wrapped about the same as a new bike, what more can be asked of the seller?
My father, the few times in his life when he bought a new car, would always walk to the back bumper and put a small gouge in the paint, right off the lot . He said it helped him not freak out as bad if an errant shopping cart ran into the car, or my sister bumped someone while parallel parking. Then again, my Dad is crazy.
Just think of that scratch as your new bike's birth-mark.
Now put some nail polish over it and go ride!!!:D

Just ride it. You'll end up scratching it and denting it yourself anyways. If you're worried about surface rust, a sticker or coating of clear nail polish will do fine to protect the material.
I wouldn't worry about tryrng to fix it - UPS won't do a thing, and the seller - well I'd say too bad myself(but I do a damned good job of packing stuff up, so it shouldn't happen to my stuff).

so there i was yesterday, screaming down the rock covered grotpeter trail. when suddenly, a jagged rock, about 8 inches long and 4 inches wide, somehow bounced up and into the main triangle of my 2 month old, gary fisher rig. it hit my seat tube, then my down tube and back into the seat tube, all leaving scratches. later on, i crashed, leaving more scratches. all of this added to previous scratches.
my point. if you ride, your bike will get scratched. just grow a pair, forget about the shipping scratch and ride the damn thing already!

Options 1, and 2.
... the Simpsons episode where Homer is driving ... a piece of electrical tape falls off of the dash, exposing an idiot light ... Homer screams "AHHHHHHH!", with the tongue wagging, no hands on the wheel ... Homer replaces the electrical tape, breathes a sigh of relief, and all is well

You're gonna **** it up anyway...
Seller was cool about it and refunded half of my shipping money which was cool I thought seeing as though ups would probably do nothing
Thanks for your thoughts on this
You know how it is you buy something new and want the moon when it comes, but I feel satisfied with how the seller handled the situation

that's cool.
i don't think you were outta line expecting 'as advertised' condition...halving the shipping is more about the gesture then the money anywho.
now go f it up yourself.
