I have a Specialized 29'r with moderate knobby tires(OEM from Specialized). I ride a LOT of paved rail trail and a bit with very smooth, packed gravel. I like to push it pretty hard speed wise and so I am looking for some faster, smoother tread 29" tires. WTB make a tire called the Vulpine, which has a smooth center and raised side blocks for cornering traction. Anyone else have any suggestions for a smoother, faster and quieter tire? Jensenusa.com has the Vulpines at $45 each and they look pretty fast.:p

my ride came w/ wtb nanoraptors, they roll pretty fast for a tire that holds that much air:p
you could look into a whole other world of tires (like he breifly mentioned above /\),there are many, many cross tires available, and all will fit yer rims:D
If you're going to go the cross tire route I highly recommend Ritchey Speedmax. They're my favorite cross tire. Smooth center with edging knobs and available in a range of widths. I run the 35mm on my Redline Conquest Pro.

Kenda Small Block 8s. Small, close packed, ramped knobs; full 2.1s, reasonable weight. I've actually got a pair with just a few rides on them I'm looking to sell. PM me if interested.

one of my bikes came with nanoraptors... when i got my 2nd bike i put the front nano from the redline onto the back of the karate monkey...
fast rolling on the street (especialy with 60psi in it) drop the psi and it's great on the trail...
i'll be getting some cheap hybrid tires soon for the redline though... little smoother and lot cheaper but still ok enough to do the ocasional curb hob and roll in dirt or grass

I took a 60 mile ride over the weekend. Half pavement, have gravel trail. 700x35 speedmax's. Gobbled up the pavement and had plenty of traction on the dirt. If you're not needing the extra volume, you should really consider some cross tires. If you want big, and are only on rail trails, the Schwabble Big Apples are supposed to be some of the smoothest tires available.
