I just saw these in my LBS, Blackspire has am 800mm wide aluminium flat bar in a huge range of colours. If you want a wide bar to keep the front end height down on a 29er, these are spiffy...

Wide bars are obviously the current big thing, and I admit they feel good. But what about those of use who ride where there are these things called "trees"? Here in New England, our trails are mainly cut through 2nd (or 3rd or 4th) growth woods. A 28-30 inch bar would be a recipe for a separated shoulder.

With the 700mm Edge Sweep bars, my knuckles are brushing small saplings and brush all the time, it wouldn't be practical to use wider bars than 700mm (27.5") on many of the XC trails around here. I think those 700mm+ bars have to be for DH/FR, and not on trails named Cut Yer Bars.
The 685mm and 700mm bars do take some bobbing and weaving through some tree gaps here.

Running 710mm Salsa bars here, I find myself steering the bike between trees in places so each end of the bar goes through separately.
I haven't smashed a hand yet, but came danged close just the other day. I felt the tree brush my hand and hit the end of the bar.
I'm not sure what would be worse, smashing my hand into a tree, or pulling my hand away and crashing my face off when the bar hits the tree with no hand on it. I suspect that eventually I'll find out.

It would be very short lived. I can guaranty that! The bars I have on my SS now are 620mm which are too narrow for my liking, 660mm seems to be the magic width for me.
