man, sounds like fun! I should have been there:eek:
would have fit right in with the OTB move.
tried calling ya Tuesday and left a couple PM's and e-mails.
are you ignoring me!!!;)
went and rode Kickapoo Monday, and rode into Comlara Tuesday but as it rained and water was standing decided not to root it up and rode off home.
Were you in the area? I saw you called today and called back about 20-30 minutes later but didn't get you. I should have left a message!
Just actually read the rest of your post. I haven't checked email yet but I don't have any PMs!?

Back on topic here: ATV and trails! A friend of mine, Paul Brunner (bowhunter extraordinaire) was disturbed by ATV riders on national forest land in New Mexico during an elk hunt. They weren't legal where he was, it was middle of the rut, and he had an afternoon ruined.
An arrow fired across the ATV bow sent a clear message...

Trippy! :cool:So is that intended as a walking surface or just to keep critters out of the hole? Am I the only one who thinks that might be included on Gary Larson's list of "Never ever do this."
I've walked on that sort of surface in the clancy grid of a theatre fly tower and the floor of anechoic chamber. It is easy to get spooked because it is often small diameter tensioned aircraft cable that makes up the mesh. :o

Yep had a great ride this morning, about 300m of climbing in 3 segments, and I cleaned a climb up a short steep exposed rock face that often gives me fits. The Continental Race Kings are really grippy on exposed granite. All while it was still only 15C out there, before it got warm. :D

Pre-flagged the SPC race course with race director Jack. We started at the start/finish line (elev.: 7,200 ft) and rode to the high spot of the course (elev.: 8,950 ft). We were on the mtn for about 5 hours. Tired, worked, but a beautiful day on the mountain! Not much talking in the truck on the way back into town. :)
Today marks a full week with NO riding or any kind.
The hand may not be broken, but it isn't good. Still kinda swollen, a little bit blue, and pretty damn sore. :( Maybe next week I'll be able to do some rail trial riding.

Got out bright and early before the heat/humidity ramped up. We're having an unusual spell of heat and humidity, 23C + 70% humidity (humidex of 29C), this is day 2 of it. :p Normally it might be 20-25C but only 45-50% humidity. Tomorrow is supposed to be 5C warmer too, and feel like 33C. But back to rain all next week, so ride or die (or ride and die).
But I managed to get out around 7:30 before it was too punishing and ride for a little over an hour on the dirt, up and down and up and down, through the woods. Usually the trails in the woods are cooler but that wasn't the case today, it was just a bit cooler out of the sun. The air just feels hot.

my first ride on the trails since my injury was today at Albion... I thought I was going to take it easy:rolleyes:, fat chance of that :D
me and a couple friends ventured out and we managed to take a peek at a good portion of the 24 hour race that will be happening next weekend...
my legs are dead, and boy did I ever miss riding all this time... good experience to test my ability to gain my confidence again with the paranoid thoughts of re-injury by trying some of the race course ... there was some sections I haven't been in before...
so many arrows everywhere to mark the course, it got confusing for a moment... a tree decided to reach out and grab me somewhere towards the end ... hmm... at that point my ankle felt a bit weak from my tendonitis that came along after my broken leg has healed... the one climb cooked me for good - thank gosh it was time to get back to the cars...
gosh I missed riding - seems the mosquitoes at Albion missed me too as they swarmed me :p
good conditions on the trails - it was sooo hot... I smelled nasty by the end of the ride - OHHHH what a feeling... felt good to smell like a soggy stale towel :D
dust and dirt everywhere...
one thing I can say is "screw this" - I'm going back to flat pedals after my injury, I need to put my clipless back...
ohhh I am so out of shape... some of the climbs killed me... and walked a few...
but damn that fork is awesome Noggy - thanks a mil:D I go down hills so much faster :D

Scratched by tree--Rode about 9 miles of rocky and rooty Wisco single track. I stopped at a fork in the trail and lost my footing and now have a nice twelve inch scab from falling into a tree. Stoooopid!! I guess a ride is not a ride without a little blood or mud, and since we haven't seen any real rain in over three weeks I have to settle for blood. Also over 80 miles on the roadie over the weekend.

Against my better judgement, I went for a two hour trail ride yesterday, and I'm paying for it. Last Sunday, I went out with some tools and did some trail work, as a few sections had grown badly, with lots of tall weeds, thorns, and vines obscuring quite a few sections of the trail. Turns out that at least some of those vines were of the POISON IVY variety. Ended up with a damned itchy spot on my one leg. Been putting hydrocortisone cream on it, and it had not been spreading terribly fast, but it wasn't going away either. After yesterday's ride however, it really took off! I have a dark red, scaly, oozing sore about twice the size of my fist on one leg, and another spot on the other, and little itchy bumps are appearing on my thighs, and both of my arms. Oh, and the back of my head. And my lower back. For some reason though, the docs refuse to give me the prednisone pills that kick poison ivy's ass in a couple of days. The one doc said, "absolutely not. Just give him the cream", and the other one said, "it isn't bad enough yet to justify prednisone". Yet?You mean I have to wait until I am completely covered with this sh*t before you will give me the proper medication?

Sounds bad, Lee. I've had a dozen epic cases of the rash in my life -- once as a kid I was so covered with it that my own cousins didn't recognize me. And I once had it so bad on my arm that I was using disposable diapers to bandage it, and soaking through 2/day. If I've been working in the woods and sweating a lot, many times the sweat seems to carry the oil into my pants with impressive results. This may be the male enhancement trick that can work for anybody if you don't mind swollen AND itchy. My wife suspects I go to the woods for self-abuse, but honestly, I don't even take a leak until I've washed my hands if I know I've been in it. Now I can pick up the 3 shiny leaves in my peripheral vision like radar, and I take a long hot soapy shower after any exposure. It's a good idea to learn to identify the vines -- they have fine, hair-like rootlets (or whatever they're called) that attach the vine to the tree -- much finer than Virginia Creeper (5 leaf ivy) where the rootlets are the size of pencil leads. Wild grape vines do not attach to tree bark like the ivies.
For treatment, generally ointments are better than creams, and antihistamine lotions, like Ziradryl, stop the itch and dry it up better than the steroid goops. Expect it to continue to break out for at least a week after the first blisters appear.

Get some Tecnu (http://www.tecnuextreme.com/). It's too late for it now, but if you think you've been in the PI, it works fantastically. I get PI pretty easily too - when I was a kid I had it on like 60% of my body once. Lucky for me it stayed away from the really uncomfortable 5% Anyway, Tecnu works great.

Lee, I don't know if its too late or not, but go to Wal-Mart or Walgreens or an equivalent pharmacy and find a product called Tecnu (http://www.teclabsinc.com/products.cfm?id=1F5604C8-9D05-4675-56129F6D83DF2417§ion=1). It works really well. It will speed up the healing process. It is good to keep it on hand. I keep some in my stash in Venezuela for "Guiatoto" (or as I call it, "the plant from HELL") which it works very well.
Hope this helps.

Yeah, I'm dumb. Rode today about 22 miles on rail trails with an average speed of 16.5mph. I was humpin' it pretty good all the way. Trouble is that coming back, man, I hit the wall.:( I knew it was hot out, but this is about the first time it caught me off guard. I had two water bottles filled with Hammer Nutrition Heed drink and a Hammer gel pack. Wasn't enough b/c I had cottonmouth all the way back. Experienced I may be, but never under estimate mother nature's heat. I'm good now but climbing up the last steep gravel access road at the trailhead tested my ability to not only climb on gravel, but also not sound like a Hoover sweeper. So it you all do ride in hot weather, be careful please.;)

It's those poor folks in Cuba who've caught hell today: flat terrain on the west end plus 150 mph winds does not a happy Saturday make. Somehow, I think that no matter how bad it will be here, they've already had it worse.
It is encouraging though to see the preps and evacuations going fairly smoothly, much more so than three years ago. Sure, there were a few lines for gasoline today, but most people started filling their extra cans back around Wednesday or Thursday. Stuff like that. Well, we'll know how it all worked in just a few days.

The BBC news was reporting that Cuba has the best organized civil defense program and resources of all the Caribbean islands but their biggest weakness is their housing inventory which is older and not hurricane resistant and will likely be heavily damaged. The BBC was reporting that they've already evacuated 300,000 people, but there's nowhere to run on an island, they are just moving them away from the point of impact.

*Anyway*, I did get in a ride today, through town to the foot of the new bridge, and across to Pass Christian (the next town to the east). Here's a pic from about the same view as in DR #118.

The poison in (some) mushrooms is hydrazine (aka rocket fuel). My grandpa had a helmet full of them in France during the war. Some Frenchman came up, gave him an earful, and swatted the helmet out of his hands. He was obviously mad at the time...but later found out it was in his best interest (and mine :D).

Big Time!! Actually getting ready for the beginning of school. So, I had to get in a ride at 9 mile Saturday, Standing Rocks yesterday, and the Airport/Nepco trails today. I am going to be making 9 mile at least once a week until they close on Oct. 15th. I didn't quite make my 50 mile goal. After I bonked at Nepco I just slowly rode home. I am starting to train for the Kortoloppet coming in February!! That means new skinny planks this year!! Plus, I will have a snow bike this year for hitting the trails.

My wife and I had a toddler-free day today, so we hit the trails together for a couple of hours! Today was her first ride on the Misfit on singletrack. I looked back jealously, as that Maverick fork smoothed out all the roots that beat the piss out of me. The wife did really well for her first dirt ride in two years. She didn't think so, but I've ridden with more than a couple of guys who have bailed out on that ride, and she stuck with it.

The airport trails are okay. That is the ones on the southeast corner of the airport property. But, they don't have much flow and it is such soft ground that it really sucks. I do use the regular trail for laps when I don't feel like burning gas. But, I really like riding 9 mile, so I guess the beer fund is going to have to make a sacrifice. The river trails are gone (I snuck in today to check and they are for the most part totally shot.) The Nepco trails are okay for a quick fix, but too many dog walkers most of the time. That sucks about your HiFi. Yeah, first time for the Korti. I am not at your level of fitness to even think about the Birke.

classic...takes longer and more things can go wrong (you have to be accurate on 2 types of wax, as you know) but if you start to slow down/bonk, it's somewhat easier to finish as you can only go so slow skating before you stop. all my humble opinion, just based on my experience, it maybe different for others.

I just nod and smile....
first time I've had something like that happen, thought all the progressives in Madtown were bike friendly, guess not, must be a few knuckle draggers around. The guys at LBS have been hit on many occasions riding their bikes to and from work, but on a Sunday afternoon with little or no traffic???

maybe you found the "new" trials I've heard that are out there? that's one drawback for me at 9-mile, I find myself looking at the tail maps a lot. At times I don't care if I'm out there for an extra 30-40 minutes or whatever just not caring where I am, but it takes too much mental energy if ya kinda want to know where ya are when one of the reasons I like to ride is to not "think" while out there.
I guess I just need to ride it more to get more familiar with it. Don't have the same issue using the skate ski trail, seems to be more of a loop.

Yup--I decided today that I will not ride there anymore without carrying a compass. Yeah, if you have not ridden sections 11, 12 and 16 then you are really missing some ass kicking rocks and nice technical climbs. I think I found another section that is not mapped and will explore that next week. This was not the first time I have been lost there. Years ago a buddy and I ended up way out on hwy N and had a 6 mile ride back on the shoulders to the parking lot. I think they need to re-map and put up better signs. I still love it and was ripping pretty good today. I love these temps.

Did my first dirt ride in almost a month last night. The knee felt pretty good - I had some strange pains in other parts of the knee, but nothing some positive thinking couldn't make go away ;) The biggest thing missing was my confidence. Every time I'd go to mash there was this little video playing in the back of my head showing the chain snapping and my knee ramming the stem. My balance was a little bit off, too, but it'll come back quick I hope. I was out for a solid two hours on the newly re-coated On-One. It may look a lot smoother than it did before, but it still rides the same - legs felt good, hands were screaming by the end of the ride. I'd been riding my Gunnar most of the time early season (before it broke) and the difference between the 853/Vicious fork combo and the 4130 On-One frame/fork is HUGE.

I got in a 60 miler this morning on the new bike. It was really perfect. Fixed at 38/14, 700x35 Ritchey Speedmax's, and Gary bars. It was an out and back ride, with half on pavement and the other half on gravel trails through a National Wildlife Refuge and a State Park. I would have ridden to the North Carolina line, but the trail turns to soft sand about two miles from the border. It makes me wish for two things; many more miles of gravel trails headed out of Richmond (not likely), and that I get more day touring in (which should happen). Maybe a fall ride down the Blue Ridge Parkway ? :p

Almost 20 road miles on the trucker last night. Got out late, so I ran my lights... beautiful harvest moon last night. Was a great ride until I got pinch flats in both tires and had to call my wife to come get me at 103rd and Metcalf. I think something is a miss w/ my route.

I've been waking up early this week, so today I jumped on my newly built SS at 5:15 EDT. At first it seemed way too dark, but a nice cover of moonlight made it eerily serene, so I headed out. I didn't see any headlights for the 5 miles to the local canal trail, and I hit a few deer trails along the way. But when I got to the river, the heavy-tree-cover induced tunnel-vision actually made seeing the singletrack off-shoots impossible. I veered-off on an alternate route home to hit some hills and stretch my legs a bit more.
Let me tell you, this new ride can climb way better than me. I need to get a few more miles under my belt... and maybe buy a light.

Today I got off of work early to go to an Eilen Jewell (http://www.eilenjewell.com/) concert. I took the long way home. A mile or so of the flood wall, with an incredible view of the river. A mile or so of tame-ish single track, another mile of fire road, and then 1.5 miles of pavement home.
The new monster cross bike rocked in all situations, but the gearing (38/14) was a bit big for the single track and paved hills. Maybe 38/16 as a compromise? Who knows?
And I feel you guys on the lights. I don't have a headlight and some waste of life stole my blinkie off my bike at work the other day. Once I get a decent light I can extend my rides home down some great fire roads. :D
-Rob.
If it weren't for a good light I'd hardly ride singeltrack from Oct to April. An awesome addition to your bike gear for sure!
Trails are almost dry, so today i rode pavement for about 50 minutes, all I had. :(

Yep got out for a ride this morning on damp to wet trails (more wet roots and rocks, and a bit of mud), maybe 20km. I am more in love with these Conti Race Kings than ever. On smooth wet embedded granite rocks in teh 6"-8" size, there's some slip, but maybe 40% slip and 60% forward grip, so even with a bit of wheel spin there's still forward traction. As long as you weight the wheel enough to deform the tread a bit, they stick really well to wet roots and rocks. Did one long rocky climb with lots of tall wet grass growing between the rocks and had no trouble making progress.

1. For storage, you gotta just stuff stuff inside from the cockpit. The new Longhauls (Colorado made derived from the Klepper) have forward hatches. I usually stow stuff in dry bags then shove them fore or aft. I have a nice little beer cooler that fits perfectly behind the rear seat under the rear deck. Nice finding an isolated beach and having a few beers and a sandwich.
2. Kleppers have an "open" cockpit design. It is good for calm weather. For heavy paddling, I have a spray deck for it with the two openings for the seats.
3. I also have the S-4 sail kit for it. Its somewhat sketchy on a beam reach, it lists heavily and I need to lean in the opposite direction. I still only have the rudder pedals. In order to make it a better sailboat, I'd need to rig up a tiller to the rudder. I've capsized it once under sail. Not fun. Its fast though. I've calculated the hull speed to be about 8 knots. I sailed it beyond that once or twice and start getting cavitation under the rear seat (where I sit). Again, scary for a beginner sailor. I backed off immediately when I felt it.
4. Its about 17' 1" if I remember correctly. It has a beam of 36". Its fast through the water considering its a folding kayak.
I also have a Pouch E68 (single) folding kayak. Its more traditional looking...looking more like an Eskimo kayak. It is about 16 feet long.

Either of you guys ever here of Ned Gillette? He was an adventure athelete (?) that once paddled a kayak around the coast of S. America from Panama to Panama. His biggest problem on that trip were pirates. On the advice of a friend that had apparently been in some banana republic coast guard he went unarmed so as to not appear as a threat. Having nothing meant he was of no value to them.
Another paddle was from San Diego to Hawaii, solo, unassisted. In the 80+ days he was at sea (a full 30 days longer than he planned-lost his sail rig found the doldrums) his desalinator went on the fritz, and he found flying fish sashimi to be palatable.
He had a number of other incredible feats to his name involving climbing, mountaineering, and skiing. Sadly he was murdered (http://outside.away.com/outside/magazine/1198/9811dispgillette.html) in his tent in front of his wife while in the mountains of northern Pakistan (the Hindu-Kush).

Slept in a little bit today, after being up late last night finishing canning tomatoes from the garden. My wife goes into work later on tuesdays, so I took advantage of that and got the day off to a great start  Dropped my wife off at work, and couldn't find a spot to park so I said F it, and headed to the trails instead. Rode for just shy of 5 hours, including some scouting for the ride over Columbus Day weekend I posted in the Hook Ups forum. Met up with two younger guys on BSOs who were lost, so I gave them a grand tour of stuff they had never ridden before. Leisurely pace, but I remember very well my first trip into the woods out there and the very generous locals who showed me around that first time. I figure passing that on is a good thing. Brought the guys back to where they knew the way out, and ran into another guy demo-ing a Blur LT. He also didn't know his way around, so I took him on a rippin' loop that I thought would sell the bike (since he was demo-ing it from the LBS I like) and by the time we were done he was grinning from ear to ear. At this point, I had been in the woods for 4.5 hours and the single Clif Bar I brought had long since ceased burning so I headed out of the woods tired, sore, and incredibly content. :)

Dark and early. With the LED lights. Here's a flashless camera shot on the trail. One out 6 that wasn't suffering from camera shake blur. A long exposure on the old digital camera but it was plenty bright to look out for obstacles and critters. Although it is very hard to tell which side of objects to ride on with artificial lights, even on really familiar trails. Almost took a couple of detours into the woods instead of following the trail.

The trail is lit up good in the photo! That seems like maybe even a bit more light than my HID which I ride on my helmet light as my only light. I think we ride 95% as fast on familiar trails as we do with the lights! I suspect that only being able to see where my head is pointed helps focus on the trail and improves speed in some places, seemed like it tonight, what a great ride!

Yep, it was a tad muddy after a rainy day yesterday, but the trail I rode is quite solid in the wet, other than a few shallow muddy spots. If you're moving at a good clip and hit some squoogey black mud while leaned over, the Race Kings require some fast reactions to catch the rear wheel stepping out, but it's predictable and recoverable.

It went behind a tree about 50 yds. out and I tried to get a pic but it took off like a streak of greased lightning, so have to post this instead.
Deer
The most common deer in Sweden is the Roe deer, a very small deer that is common in many other parts in Europe as well. Normal weight is seldom over 35 kilos, and the total population is around one million. The Roe deer is frequent in the south and the middle but rare far north. Other deer such as the Red deer and Fallow deer have spread populations but not nearly as much as the moose or the Roe deer.

that... not til spring anyhow. I have not
had innnermess access for some time, so
I am updating the happenings.
The area is full of great trails, maybe I can
get 50, or Pea down here to enjoy the fall
foilage in the ozarks. I have taken up the
responsibility of leading local riders, new
riders, or vets unfamiliar with the area on
group rides every Saturday at 3 p.m.
I do this for Phat Tire bike shop
in Bentonville. Chris Brosh and Tim Robinson
are the owners, and they are good people.
I guess you would say I am a PR guy for the
shop, and biking in general. Leading new, or
unfamiliar faces into our world is a tough
job, but I do it the best I can. ;)

After being off the bike for the last few weeks I went out for a spin on the local trails. I had returned the touring bike to it's former rigid, SS mountain bike self. It was a good ride. My legs are a little stiff and sore in that good way that only comes after time spent off the bike. I'm looking forward to the rest of the fall riding season. The leaves and late sun, slight chill and crisp air with hint of earthy decay make fall trail riding my favorite time of the season.

I haven't been on a trail ride in 6 days and counting:o. Just commuting through the week. Today I had to run a few errands, and had my 19mo old daughter with me, so I thought I'd hook her trailer up to the Misfit. I concluded that a 25 pound trailer, a 23 pound child, eight feet of the heaviest chain I could find plus a lock for it, and a Kryptonite New York chain and lock makes a 38/16 ratio on a 29er a bit of a drag. Putting the trailer back on the geared LeMond Poprad cross bike tomorrow, methinks. No problem on the flats, but damn, the hills had my toothpick legs burning!
Then again, that which does not kill me... Maybe I'll try it a couple more times before getting the cheater bike out.

I got in a couple of laps of the local singletrack loop today. Started out as a solo ride, but I saw a couple of guys starting out on their ride, both on Rocky Mountain ETSX bikes.. Noticed after the first lap that one of them was wearing shorts that said "TransRockies 2007", so, naturally, I asked the stupid question, " You raced the Trans Rockies?". "Yup".
The one guy was just getting his second or third ride of the year in (some sort of injury), so for the second lap, he said he would catch up to us in the parking lot for the third lap. So, me and the other guy took off. That one guy was FAST! I had to put in considerable effort to not get dropped by him, and excuse me why I brag (kinda), but I am pretty quick through my local trail. I do ride it many, many times a year, so I guess I should be quick through there.
Anyhoo, turns out this guy rides EVERY DAY, says he makes it a priority. (Insert "jealous" smilie here). And this is the trail he usually rides, so that would explain the lap times.
Alas, there was no third lap for me. With about 2 minutes left on my second lap, I went into a quick right hand turn a little too hot, and my front wheel pushed out a bit, and off the trail. I went over the bars, and now my front wheel needs some time in a truing stand. And my knee needs some ice.

This frame is hot off the boat, didn't even have the permanent paint scheme. They don't even have spare derailleur hangers yet, the frame is really shipping near the end of the year (I only got to borrow it for today). The bare frame is 1300gms (2.86 pounds) without paint. That's 0.5 pound lighter than my scandium hardtail frame. This bike just flies, I was amazed the first time I stood up out of the saddle for a steep climb, the bike is very light and the frame has no flex in the BB or rear triangle, every bit of pedal input goes into making it move forward. This is the standard carbon Vertex 50/70 frame, not even the Team frame which is lighter and stiffer yet. :D

Took the new 29er (GF HiFi) out for the first singletrack ride today. Maurice gave me a DR jersey, and I wore it for the first time today, but I can't ride in it any more. It's so long it keeps snagging my saddle.
Stopped by the bike shop to pick up accessories for the new ride. Got a bell, pump, gloves, saddle bag, extra bottle cage, and ordered the bar ends (Salsa double bend) and a pair of fenders.
Couldn't find anyone to ride with, so I went solo, my favorite ride through Tamarancho private singletrack. My friend had told me that I might have trouble with the bigger bike on the tight switchbacks, but he was wrong. Another friend had asked me how the bike felt relative to my old bike. I told him it felt like someone else's bike, but in a week it would feel like mine.
My first ride on the new bike was a couple of days ago, with a friend making his return to riding, three weeks after he laid on a gravel road, unconscious and bleeding from a 33-stitch cut on his head. He had a helmet, but he used it up.
The two of us had been riding together, and when he went down I had to find a part of the road that didn't have him or his bike on it before I could stop. He was unconscious for a minute or two, but after about fifteen minutes he gathered himself enough to ride the rest of the way down the hill. I got him to a fire station, where he was transported to the hospital for the damage repair.
Same guy broke his clavicle right in front of me on a ride in April. It's been a tough year for him.

Today is the day of rest, but I've been commuting pretty much daily on my Bear Valley I picked up cheap at a police auction. Rear tire is temporary — I got a sidewall gash in my other slick so this doesn the trick. Like I like my hotrods! Meats in the back and skinnies up front. New to trail riding, so I'm looking at hopefully finding something with maybe front suspension at the next auction that isn't cheapo Walmart stuff.
Lets hope this attachment thing works:

__________________Holy Crap! Get that guy a full-face and armour until his luck turns around! Good reason to have a riding buddy, eh? The only time I had a trail ride end in an ambulance ride, I was by myself, and have no idea how long I was unconscious for. Was so dazed, the first phone call I made was to my riding buddy, to see if he was coming out for a ride that day!

The Rock Solid is only 700 grams Rocky. Come on over to the dark side!:p. The 1250 wheels, carbon fork, carbon frame, carbon etc....... you don't need suspension for a bike that hovers half an inch over the ground, being just a little lighter than air, and all.:D
BTW, I feel now might be a good time to remind you that your obsolete hardtails are more than welcome to hang out at my place, though they will be converted to singlespeed. I even have a nice Fox Vanilla RLC waiting here for one. (Got a killer deal on the internet for that fork:D)

I tried :(
Cue up the Queen...
Played hookey today to go ride with a buddy whos weekend is sun/mon. My only stipulation was we don't ride the same old local trails. So we drove 45miles to a really cool network neither of us knows well but have ridden once or twice, and had a great ride! About two hours of winding singletrack that is constantly up and down (often steep). I managed two decent wrecks, both of them just silly, not payin enough attention. First I hit the top of my helmet on a tree leaning over the trial hard enough to ring my bell pretty good, second time I caught my handlebar on a sapling at the edge of the trail which threw me 4-5 feet from the bike. Luckily no significant damage to hide nor bike.
We followed that with burritos and 32oz drafts. Best monday I can recall!

the goodies where from the farmers market in quebec city. That would be an even better choice. Although the IGA had some pretty nice organic produce and a really good deli :D I shopped there quite often this summer. Were you staying at Chateau MSA?
Here's that same view east in summer time colours... and a view up the gondola lift to the top.

Yup Chateau MSA, I must say they are really bike friendly and easy going. No problem keeping the bikes in the room. Would like to go there in the summer also as you did. Of course we are going back in the fall again next year. I recomend it highly, it is a real jewel.

Zipping along a trail at speed, minding my own business, I see a black squirrel sitting about 4' off the trail, safe and sound and well away from the trail surface. I get about 2' away and the stupid squirrel launches itself out in front of me just in time to get run over by the front wheel. Might have just been the tail as it didn't cause a great deal of deflection at the bars, but I think it decided to turn around as some part of the critter smacked the downtube and BB shell with a solid thwang on the alloy frame tubes. It wasn't there when I looked back so it wasn't instantly fatal but I bet it had it's bell rung thoroughly.
Since I moved out here from the prairies I had gotten out of the habit of seeing stupid gophers laying on the road after they would stand up on their hind legs just as cars would drive over top so they would be missed by the wheels but whacked by the front crossmember. If they would have stayed low to the street they would have been fine. Squirrels are just the West Coast version of stupid gophers.

Due to Darwin-esque pressures, the West Coast Black Squirrel, had developed an abnormally thick skull (what these pressures are, I cannot say at this moment) when compared to the Rocky Mountain Squirrel. Because energy goes into the production of bone material for the skull, brain matter is sacrificed. The West Coast Black Squirrel has a pea-sized brain compared to the normal walnut-sized brain of the Rocky Mountain Squirrel.
