Oh yeah, he's hooked. There'll be an order for that Lightspeed to have paragon dropouts added, or it will get an Eno rear hub wheel to pack along with the S&S coupled frame. Hey, that's perfect, a TiS&SSS!

I'm at sea-level here...let me try the same experiment at starting at 6000 ft, up steep rocky trails in the Gila (http://www2.srs.fs.fed.us/r3/gila/). :o I think a Monocog could be the first step...cheap.

Yeah I rode today and it was a ride to hell! First off...WTF..I'm I the only person who ventures into the woods around here any more?? What ever happend to underage drinking?? It's been a number of weeks since I was on the MTB...I have been nursing this Road thing but it's out of my system now...a good Century does that ....but back to my venting...All the local paths are grown over and it like no one has been on them since the weather got warm! Have I told ya how much I just love getting my body cut up by wild rose? The really sucko thing was the poison ivy that I ran into...anyone ever use Simple Green to get that stuff off ya?

Yeah...I rode today:mad:

Had to make the tough decision to either drive to Squamish to see some of the Test of Metal race and meet the DR crew, or stay here in North Van and ride. Light rain was forecast for Squamish, the race was using all the best trails, and it was sunny here in the morning so riding locally won out over a drive to Squamish. Managed to get the ride in before the rain did arrive here mid afternoon. Sorry Thanita and Maurice, my priorities were to maximize my time in the dirt today. :o

Me and two buddies thought it would be a good idea to watch the sunrise last tues @ 5:45 @ 12,000 + feet. We started out at 3:00am @ 8,???' and at 3:15 D-nuts broke his chain. At 3:20 D-head forgot to thread the chain through that strange guide inside the derailleur cage. Time to bomb. We also had a half hour climb to the top of the peak. The moon lit the way as we climbed our way up. MAde it to the peak at 5:15 to freeze our bb off. Nothing like a lung popping climb before 6am to start a nice a day of construction. We hit the single track all the way back to town to top off an epic ride with two very good friends. :D

To celebrate the arrival of summer at 5:26AM today I went out for a ride early this sunny morning. Hit one muddy spot that is usually quite easily traversed, but it's been just dry enough that the mud was the consistency of peanut butter, I made it about 2' across the 6' long mud spuggle (spot + puddle + bog) and my 2.1 Nevegals looked like the Pugsley 4" tires. The next 100' of trail I was flinging pieces of mud off the tires as big as a road kill gopher. Many of those end up hovering at face height just long enough to need evasive manouevers.

On the park access road they have one of those automated radar speed indicators that is picking up the trail as well as the road. That stretch of trail runs along the water pipeline berm, fairly flat but quite bumpy. This is the perfect test bed for comparing the hardtail to the FS bike on the same trail, I can compare the maximum speed between the two, as it's just rough enough that you can't pedal for all of it without having to stand on the hardtail pedals to ride out the bumps. You can hammer flat out on the FS bike. hmmmmm.

And then once I got back in the trees I was zipping through singletrack that was getting quickly over grown, and there was one evil blackberry vine hanging almost vertical at the side of the trail that I couldn't quite avoid. My right arm looks like it was close to a psychotic kitten grenade explosion, it's criss-crossed with little red lines. My hand was on the brake lever it took the brunt of the slashes that drew blood.

Got to go on the Sunflower bike shop ride tonight at the river trail. It was really a good time. A group of about twelve of the nicest people I think I've ever met. Riders of all skill levels, from first timers on up to tham class riders. Muggy as hell, I was soaked by the first mile. A couple SS riders and even a niner fixie ridden by fellow forum member Josh@altbike. Tell you what. That guy is really fast for a shaven legged hippie lover:p Deffinatly a good time. No group pics or ride shots. Didnt want to be a pest since it was my first time there.

Started out here. A nice mile or so gravel warm up ppath before you hit the trail.

Traveled nearly 24 hours...left my apartment at 10:00PM and arrived at my mom's house at 7:00 PM.

I've had to learn how to drive again...keep it between the lines, drive the speed limit, obey all stop signs and traffic lights...what a pain in the ass! The developed world sucks in a lot of ways! ;)

Today! :) :) :) :)
I went to the LBS to pick up my Litespeed! Yeeha! Amazing what S & S couplings can do to a bike! The thing was packed in a suitcase sized case! I assembled it, tweeked it abit (still needs more tweeking) and went for a ride this evening when things cooled down a bit. Solo Summer Solstice ride!

I rode to a new open space area in town, I used to ride this area years ago when it was just a place with jeep roads...now the city has replanted over the roads and volunteers (my mtb friends) have put in a whole network of interlinking technical rocky trails with switchbacks up and down hill, rocks, yucca, cactus, etc. :D I'll take my camera next trip over there...the place is a Disneyland of trails all within the city limits! It is a very cool place to ride...Very cool!

Coming from sea-level to 6000 ft I was suffering but not too much once I got warmed up. (I grew up at this elevation and I think my body quickly adapts to this elevation.)

Anyway, my first impression with the Litespeed...High performance! If the Merlin is a Bentley, the Litespeed is a Masaratti! It is quick, agile, and it climbs like a S.O.B.! It decends with confidence! Wow! Amazing! It feels bit stiffer in the rear end than the Merlin but extremely agile and lively at the same time! The Merlin might take second place to this bike.

I am starting to think the guy I bought it from either pampered this bike, or must have only ridden it around the block. Examples: the frames decals are nearly perfect (this is a year 2000 frame), the drivetrain shows no dirt or wear, the crank has no scratches and the decals are still visible, the clipless pedals (Wellgos) were set on the lowest setting...I cranked them down to the highest setting! :D Some parts are funky, but I am real pleased with the bike overall! YEEEEEEEEEEHHHHHAAAAAA!

I'm so envious, Rocky. I'd love to be able to do a pre-work ride, but I'd probably have to wake up at 3:30-4:00 am to make it happen. I already get up at 5:30 every morning, and am running out the door at 7:20-ish. Then, I make the mad dash commute to Amarillo & come flying into the office at exactly 8:00 am straight up. Ride #2 for the S&S coupled Litespeed Toccoa! Yeeha!
I hung out downtown a big chunk of the day with the trippy hippies, while waiting for the air to cool down. Finally I took off on one of my favorite old rides!

Leaving my mom's (elevation ~6010 ft), I rode about 5 miles of pavement to the forest boundary (elevation ~6500 ft).

Once out in the forest, I had many options of where to go...I chose the "Berg Trail" to the "Continental Divide Trail" (CDT) over the "hill of death" eventually to forest road 858 then forest road 853, then pavement back into town. Total ride was about 18 miles (if I remember correctly from the old days)...about 8miles of it is single track and 3 miles is dirt road, the rest pavement.

Litespeed evaluation #2: Fast, agile, likes to jump and catch air on whoop-de-doos. Great climber, great on tight, rocky, technical single track. I dabbed only twice (my fault...too tired on one section, bad line on the other).

Quote of the day...a friend at the LBS said, "That's one hellava travel bike!"

It was hot as hell and no air was moving in the woods,so rather than watch him pound the mini pump I took a chance and offred him my co2. Told him if I flatted to stop for me..luckily no worries

Dusted off the old Bridgestone, aired up the tires and went road riding with a group of friends this morning. The first 6 miles is all climbing, from about 6,000 ft. to 7,000 over the Continental Divide. Then the first down hill.

Talking smack to my bud Gary, he shifts his Waterford into high gear and starts pedalling. We go blasting down this narrow mountain grade (NM Hwy 15) at 40+ mph. At the bottom of the hill is a blind dogleg turn to the right, and with practice one can blast through this turn without brakes.

Well...not riding my road bike much I am out of practice. Hanging on Gary's wheel, I am too far to the outside...a bad line into this turn. Momentum carries me across the road and onto the other lane...HOLY S**T, there's a car coming! A red Ford Escort.

I had 3 options; 1. ditch the bike and run it off the left hand side of road into the trees and rocks probably badly maiming me and my bike. 2. collide with the car and probably get badly maimed or killed. 3. try to salvage the situation.

Well you can see by my typing, option 3 was what I chose...

I slammed the brakes, skidding and fishtailling enough to barely get back on my side of the road. The car's side mirror missed my hip by inches (probably less than 6). The car didn't blast his horn until I was well past him. I am guessing that guy pooped his pants.

I continued riding, Gary laughing over his shoulder, my wheel slightly twisted from the skid, but we continued on the mountain road. I was much more conservative going into the turns and no more talking smack! :o

Total milage 20 miles out, 20 miles back. 40 miles total.

I am trying to resize a photo to post...but this computer doesn't have the software. Maybe posting something later.

Jeez Louise,I love riding the Gila (http://www2.srs.fs.fed.us/r3/gila/)!

I drove my rental car out to the Gomez Peak area and started from there. I could have ridden out there, but I was feeling pretty lazy and it was already late, about 11:00 AM.

Behind Gomez Peak are a series of loops that the USFS and the local mtn bikers have developed for hiking and biking. These trails are narrow, rocky, rutty, and fun!

I rode around for about an hour and 1/2 and did a couple of loops and connecting trails. The climbs are technical with baby heads and rock steps to deal with.

The downhill parts the trails slalom through trees, dodging baby heads, pinon and ponderosa pines, scrub oak, and prickly pear cactus! Its a blast to fly over the whoop-de-doos, and rock ledges and stairsteps.

On my final trail, I went down a section we call the "Powerline trail" which decends down and over rocky outcrops and drop-offs. What a blast! YEEEEHHHHAAA :D :D

The Litespeed Toccoa is getting Gila Proven. It has its first scratches from bashing rocks with the crankarms. Somehow I got a nick on my left knee but I don't remember crashing anywhere. Oh well, typical of riding in the Gila! :D

I rode today, did an 18 mile road ride to work, which is not too fun, but at least it is the morgul bizmark course featured in the hit movie American Flyers.

But over the weekend I rode up in winterpark which had awesome trails and went as high as 11,500'... Got to get all this in before I move to the burg.

I went out for a ride on the neighbourhood trails again tonight, mostly to get outside where it was cooler than in the house, but still quite warm for this part of the world,so I was riding at 70% normal speed to do some more sightseeing. Went down a gravel road I've been down hundreds of times and happened to see a couple of people step out of the trees and I found a trail entrance I have never noticed before. It connected two areas I was familiar with, on a mostly ridable trail, all except for one big angled root that will absolutely spit you off a 30' embankment on the downhill side, but might just be ridable going up. I almost did an endo coming down off a rock outcrop when I missed the smooth transition I rode up by about a foot. It was already quite dark in the woods, damn mountains cast shadows everywhere.

Finding a new trail in your own backyard, even one that's only 600-700' long is like Christmas, only with less snow.

Got smoked by racer dude on a climb today. I decided my whole 15 mile loop would be big ring riding today so the hill was making me grunt and this dude just flew by. I was thoroughly impressed. Uncommonly awesome late June weather in Wisconsin is making riding unbelievably fun. Mid 70's and very low humidity. Usually we are in the 80 with dew point in the 70's at this time of the year.

Thanks Myron...There is a "black diamond" type trail on that Tadpole Ridge. Steve Garro of Coconino bicycles fame showed up at my house once and we rode Tadpole and he said it kicked his ass...and Steve is the best cyclist I've ever seen (before his accident).
If anyone came here for a week or two, I could take them on a different fun technical ride everyday, all within 20 or 30 miles of Silver City. Today's ride, I rode from my mom's house.
It is definately fun to ride here again with a good bicycle. Last year I rode a rental and it just wasn't worth it.

Rode with two buddies today up at the race course.

Officially we were looking for a new beginner's course, but actually we were just playing on the expert's course which is very technical. We decided that it was too hard to send novices on.

I didn't have the chance to take too many pics. Too rocky, and having too much fun. I didn't want to stop and pull out the camera, etc., etc.

Elevation is in the 8000 ft range.

Just got back from a ride by the river. Wanted to get out before it got hot.

There's one piece of deadfall that is nasty to cross when it's been wet as there's mud in front and behind and it's very slippery when wet. In the dry its easier. One direction is OK as you hit it along the direction of the trail, then the trail turns right. Coming the other way you have to make a sharp left around an obstacle and then wheelie onto the log, and I often mess that up. Today there were two women hikers coming along so I had to clean the obstacle or risk my manliness (both apparent maniless and the real gnads if it goes wrong), and I managed to clean it just fine.

Also came across a hunting pack of women on mountain bikes on the way out, maybe a dozen gals who had stopped blocking the trail and weren't going to let me by since I had dangly bits. I feared for my life like you might being a lone guy in a club with a bachelorette party on the go when the women invade the mens washroom while you're standing at the urinal. ;)

And coming back across a pedestrian bridge to my side of the canyon, while I was waiting for a guy who couldn't get his horse under control, a gal came up behind me and she was riding a nearly identical Rocky Mountain ETSX-70. We chatted on the uphill to the road about frame longevity and her creaking frame.

It was a good way to spend a morning and now I am hungry as a... a... a... hungry guy.

The Great Divide Race is using Adventure Cycling's (http://www.adventurecycling.org/routes/greatdivide.cfm)route, which uses mostly jeep roads, pavement, and some singletrack.

The CDT is the hiking trail. It is still a work in progress but the new sections here are being built with mtn bikes in mind. It is a very diverse and fun trail ranging from desert to alpine forest. Our high point today was around 9000 ft. on the Black Peak Trail which hooks into the CDT.

One of my last rides in Moab was Behind the Rocks and Denman Canyon...very remote country. I did it solo, therefore I rode very conservatively and no problems. The canyon country is awesome for sure!

Back in the day in the late 80's, I was on my original Trek 850 and did Monitor-Merrimack with another teacher friend. We were heading back to the truck and I was zooming down the two track. I lost it in some deep sand and crashed. I tumbled and came up laughing because it was such a rush. A combination of speed, adrenaline and sheer beauty, it kind of overwhelms the senses.

Oddly enough Halloween is the big event for amateur "blow yourself up with fireworks" around these parts. July 1 everyone seems happy to let the pros blow up $100,000 worth of fireworks on a barge in English Bay. I think it''s because there's no mention of fireworks in our national anthem.

I forgot my shoes at home, so I had to ride in my craptastic Chet Thomas IV skate shoes. My pedals are 959 SPD, so it was uncomfortable. The trail was in great shape - nice and dry. The 5 km climb was pretty much perfect - except for the bugs. It was around 100% humidity and getting warmer all the time. We were sweating buckets, which allowed the DEET to wash into my eyes rather effectively.

Apparently, not having cycling shoes was a good thing, as I made it to the top first. Huzzah! My ass was thouroughly kicked on the descent, since we had to go over loose babyheads, root ledges, rain ruts and logs all on tight singletrack. My feet kept slipping off the pedals, causing a fast/hard groin-to-saddle interaction that was not good.

I still made it to the trailhead first, although that may be because Ry felt pity for me. I'll probably never know. So, the moral of this story is: don't leave home without your shoes.

rockyrider
07-03-2006, 06:39 PM
Did you ride from the Lac Des Arcs side or the Barrier Lake side? The switchbacks up from the north end of Barrier lake side are just ugly steep. I can't imagine how you'd ride that uphill without being clipped in.

Great view to the east, here's a shot from the last time I went over Jewel Pass in 2000.

pinkrobe
07-04-2006, 02:34 PM
We took the usual way up the "easy" switchbacks from the Barrier side and crossed the pass from East to West. I wanted to stand near the top, but it was too steep and loose. The Lac des Arcs side would have made a great hike, assuming I left my bike behind. When we finished, Ry says "I'm impressed. If I had forgotten my shoes on this ride, I would have gone home". I'm not sure how to take that. Is he saying he actually is impressed, or is he being sarcastic, implying I'm an idiot. It's a bit of a toss-up...

The Lac des Arcs side would have made a great hike, assuming I left my bike behind.I've ridden Jewel Pass from the Lac Des Arcs side once, it's an unrelenting climb, but back in 1989 or 1990, it was at least a fairly well maintained trail (back in 1989 I was riding a Mongoose rigid bike with 7 speeds and a 12-28T cassete and 24 T granny gear). Because you can't see the switchbacks for the brush each side of the trail, you just keep climbing in a tunnel of brush, and hope that when you get to a corner it's the last one, but it never seems to be. That same ride we rode out over the power line cut directly north of Barrier Lake and out to the road to the dude ranch access overpass and back to Lac Des Arcs on the highway, doing about 70km/h downhill. That was an epic ride.

Yes I did. The staples came out last week. The swelling went down, finally, enough for me to get my bike shoes on. So for the first time in a month, I rode. :D I did about 40 miles total, with a lot of screwing around town, and watching the parade, eating BBQ, and laughing at the kids egg toss. What a great day. Now I'm gonna shower and grill something dead, and wash it down with a cold 1554.

halla nice man, my name is kenneth and i have a health problem. it seems that i have pusy warts on my cods.

You laugh...but we actually got a similar call, yesterday. Seems our phone number is listed in the phone book in the gov't. pages right below the Health Dept.

This lady with a very thick southern accent called in and began telling the other secretary that she needed to schedule some sort of test. Meredith (the secretary) could not understand what kind of test she was asking for, so she asked her to repeat it several times. She asked the lady, "Are you needing a driver license test?"

Finally, the woman, exasperated, said, with emphasis, "No! I need a test for my VAGINA!!!!"

After she was told she had called the Highway Patrol office, she quietly hung up, and we had a good laugh for a good long time.:D

I wish I was going riding. We beg for rain for months and finally get it....during the best time of the year for riding. I'm not gonna complain about the rain, but I wish these afternoon/evening thunderstorms would come earlier in the day, when I am stuck at work. Every day, they've been coming during the only time I have to ride, each day. That sucks!:(

It is clouding up again, as we speak. By the time I leave work, in a bit, it'll probably be raining again.:( :( :(

Feeling cocky and full of ourselves, Keith and I decided to take on "The Red Tail Trail' in Conway, New Hampster. Hell, we knew what hill climbing was all about. Nothing they had could be that much more extreme than our rides in the hills of southern Maine.
Full of piss and vinegar and over confident, we parked and rode. 5 1/2 miles of climbing later we secured the top of Black Cap Mountain. The piss and vinegar was gone and we were certainly not over confident anymore.

Our friend who had ridden here before had turned around and returned from whence he came. A wimpy 2 hour outing. A brief discussion with some gnarly dude on an Ellsworth turned us onto a trail back that would give us a true loop. We probably should have turned around and limped back. But Keith and I pressed on. Dumb and dumber.

Instead of down, or at least a trail approaching level, we climbed some more. When the trail decided to head down, it did not screw around. Hold on to your jock and keep your big butt back bud, we were in for some serious downhill action. My legs and arms were frozen hard to the bike and a big grin plastered on my face. Or was it a silent scream not able to make it out of my mouth. Serious pucker factor anyway.

At some point a mile or so into this intense downstroke I decided to actually stop and take stock. My body was one big knotted muscle. Riding a hardtail on this stuff made me vow to build up that new Slayer ASAP. Shut up Keith. Yeah, yeah. I ain't the tough guy I pretend to be.

Proving that I was more than one card shy of being coherent and alert, I decided to check out the heat index of my disc rotors. Because I had full finger DR gloves on, I touched the edge of the rear rotor to my wrist. A word of advice. Don't do this. I now sport a 3 inch blister on my arm. Like I said earlier. Dumb and dumber. If there was any question as which one of us was dumber, it was cleared up for sure now. I will say it looks kinda cool. My wife was not impressed though. And I thought chicks dug scars. Go figure.

I need to come up with some riding lie to cover up this one.

"Dude, I was slammin her hard for a couple of miles and catching air every 20 feet. All of sudden I stacked it. The bike and I swapped ends a few times. Ended up in the pucker after mowing down a pine or two. And all I got was this burn from the rear rotor when the bike ran over me."

That one might work. Yeah right.

So I sit here after a 4 1/2 hour body bashing mind blowing ride in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. This Fat Flatlander from Maine has been put in his place. I can't wait to go back.
