Bastage, it was warmer here today, maybe like +4 metric. I just couldn't make myself leave the house.
A friend and I rode the local trails (a few anyway) with 4+ inches of 5 day old snow on them. The going was a bit tough but I've never had so much fun on a bike going so slow!

the Jay Challenge (http://www.jaychallenge.com/winter/index.htm) a great event, one that is now firmly posted in my yearly MUST RIDE schedule. brilliantly co-ordinated, like tutu wearing ducks doing a ballet on ice. not to mention chili, soup and fondue at the checkpoints.

Alright you tools, nobody gone for a ride? I must admit the last riding I did (dirt riding) was in California...
Since then - due to knee recovery from my stupid aSS fall, I have been spinning indoors ...
So, now the saga of California riding continues... I rode Sycamore Canyon yesterday, not bad pace, as I was riding along side the honey as he was running.
I did however see a DIRT RAG jersey on the trail, and totally should have stopped them and scolded them to see if they were a member on the forum... not sure... but if you are out there and saw a crazy looking chick on a raw framed singlespeed wearing this nasty ass bright pale blue jersey, it was the Mizz... All I could say as he was roaring by with his friend "Nice jersey". Next time I am here longer, I will post a shoutout to all you fellow Dirtraggers that live out here for a ride... last minute trip u see...
Today I road Wildwood Park... was exhausted from riding in the 80+ heat with winds that almost blew the Mizz like a kite I say!!! Some crazy ass trails... I will admit to walking some of it due to my inexperience and having never been there before, one wrong move and the Mizz would have had to be collected at the bottom of a cliff.
Today's experience however makes me realize I still have alot to work on, but has not steered me away from wanting to ride...in fact, next time I come out, I want to tackle it again. Took a nice swim when I wiped out in the water trying to cross to the other side. Lots of peole hiking on the single track made it a bit difficult to ride down the cool downhills... some of those downhills were awesome!
Not too many riders. But all in all, a fun time and went with some experienced riders who were very patient with me. In fact they think it is cool that a girl rides and is on a single speed, cause apparently they don't see very many chicks at all on the trails when they ride... made me feel good.... tough girl who wants more on her SS :D :D :D

I've been off my bike for about 10 days due to an eye infection. Yesterday the doctor said everything was looking okay.
I went out this morning for about an hour. About 40 minutes into the ride, some sunscreen/sweat got into that eye and boy howdy was that unpleasant. Then despite my glasses, the wind was really bothering my eyes, I decided to cut the ride short.
Need to get better prescription sunglasses that better protect my eyes from sun, dust, and wind. Developing cataracts...not sure the cause, but sunlight accelerates the formation of them. Getting old sucks.

Hope your eyes get well, Mimbs.
Been off the bike for a while too so I took the Roadster back & did the 3-mile road loop through the state park. The last 10 of my 21 miles was an increasing rainfall - so gradual that it took a while to notice it was pouring pretty good. I was just having too much fun - and that all came to an end as lightning struck about 200yds from me  - surprised the hell out of me especially since I had not heard ANY thunder or seen flashes up to that point. Finally get to the car and the radio is squawking & I find out there's a tornado warning for the town to the east. Spring's here! :D

Had a similiar experience when riding in Wyoming on my bike tour. No place to go or hide. Lightning hitting nearby a couple times. It was pretty freaky.
Found some killer sunglasses (http://www.heavyglare.com/catalog/model.php?brand=17&series=47&model=1026)for cycling/sea kayaking on-line. Now I need to go back to the doctor to get a copy of my prescription.

Ok, it could have been 300yds. ;) Crack followed the flash pretty quick, though. Most of the loop is out in the open, crossing dams & winding between cornfields where I saw the turkey & deer playing. Fortunately, at the time of the strike I was riding the only part with forest on both sides so I felt less-exposed. Still had to get to the car. I imagine you are a lightning rod in the eastern part of WY I have been to. Yikes indeed.

You do know that more people are killed by lightning strikes on nearby trees, where the tree is converted to shrapnel and steam, than there are killed by the lightning bolt itself.

I rode some singeltrack tonight. Not the greatest ride of 07 so far. The snow had a nasty frozen crust on it that was lung searing and leg sapping, and the path beaten down by the walkers would push the tires all over the place semi randomly.

Its very humbling indeed when a young 20-something year old passes me on his sub-$100, 35+ lb. low-grade carbon steel bike with bubblegum looking welds, when I am riding a $4000 22.5 lb. hand-crafted titanium frame. Makes me feel old and fat.

it was a hack job duct tape last minute number but arent they the most rewarding?
you see at 21:00 i was informed that the family mover had an appointment at the chevy dealer 8am (no, it is NOT ok to wait until 28k for your FIRST oil change)...with the kids in bed and no friends tp pick me up i donned my supersuit and threw the roadie in the short bus.
for a warm week the mercury dropped fast (to -10 by 930) and my cape was at the cleaners.
quick sprint alone on the main roads to brampton then up and around - normally this would be fraught with disaster as bolton et environs is not bike friendly. i was alone and the super arc was more than ample light (enough to keep the hummers at a safe distance).
a quick 1.5hrs into a headwind when no ride was planned...nice.
it needs to be picked up later today...ok back in 3hrs...

Yes I did!
'Bout 60 miles on the fixie. Thank God! I was ready to lose it, and axe murder a nun, or something. Sunny and 60. Perfect day. Still 5 feet on the trails, so the road is the only option, unless I drive 2.5 hours to Fruita. But a taint soreing ride none the less. :D
I rode yesterday. Bloody muddy in the forest so skinny tires and lycra was the order of the day...but I must admit to feeling a little inadequate after reading about OTBs 60 miles on a fixed gear bike :o .
I'll make myself feel better by saying I didn't have enough free time for 60......

I rode yesterday but I guess I wasn't in the zone which is why I eventually crashed and got the puncture wound to my shin.
I did climb a new trail, a trail that is usually ridden down. It was the first time I tried it in the opposite direction and riding the Litespeed, I wasn't disappointed. It scrambled up the steep skree slope without a wimper. I am always amazed how that bike climbs. The Z-max (rear) always hooks up.
I eventally crashed on a small technical descent. All rutty, etc. I don't know what happened exactly but when I tried to turn to the left, the tires slipped on the ball-bearing like surface and down I went. (not a Z-max in front).
I washed out the dirt from the gash with my water bottle, then rode home while blood filled my sock.
Today my pants legs are dabbled in blood and lymph oozing from my road rash. :o

Finally after nearly dying with the stomach flu and now bronchitis, I decided to take a gingerly ride on my SS. No snow right now in coastal NJ which is good, but riding frozen sand or hard wet sand is easier. Currently, it feels like pedaling through sticky mud with temps at 55 degrees. I rode a patch of woods near my house and was pleasantly surprised to find a BMX bowl and wall ramps. Wierd find if you consider it was in the middle of the woods and it was superby constructed with concrete pads. Only an hours worth of playtime for me, I'm still weak.

Yeah, I rode about 20 miles today in somewhat muddy conditions, the low tech method of mudproofing a Brooks is a couple of bags and duct tape.
I found that with albatross handlebars you can achieve a kind of
aerodynamic positon (fighting the wind) and with the wind I found myself in the highest gear going "too" fast downhill.

i didn't go to the "semi-local" park's trail network like i had wanted to,but i'm glad i didn't.i went over across from my house to just beat around an old moto-practice track before goin on a road ride, and remembered there was a trail up the hill from there back in my teen years that was too snug for dirtbikes.
i figured it would be grown up/neglected after all these years, but i rode up too hava look anyways...now,i spent a little time "pruning",but rode about 4 miles of it (before my knife started gettin dull:rolleyes: ),and headed back, only to ride that 4-ish miles again:p !
then i went for a 10 mile road ride to roll the "total odo" over the next 100 mile mark-hey,some excuse is better than none:p !
cool.w/ some moderate cleanup work, that'l be a decent single&doubletrack trail (rocky+hilly),and near as i remember,it went about 11 miles, and connected to several other single-double track trails at various spots:way cool,as it's only about 1/4 to 1/2 mile from my drive way!!!
when i got home,my 5 year old son (5 this may) said that was stupid to ride in the mud,so i gave him this look (it always makes him laugh/cackle) and my 10 year old daughter snapped it.and, yes,it was too warm for a beanie @ 78 deg f,but the misses had the a/c goin wild inside!happy trails.

A spectaular day for a ride, sunny and cool. And today was the first day on tubeless tires on the Mavic Crossmax XL's that I've had for a while. I was skeptical of the value of tubeless tires but these things really do roll fast.
I have been running Kenda 2.1 Nevegal Stick-E tubed tires on this bike. Today I was running IRC Mibro 2.1 Tubeless and they were really fast rolling and grippy, running the same pressure I usually do in the Nevegals. Hard to say how much is the tubeless factor and how much is the Stick-E versus IRC rubber compound difference, but just based on coasting distance and climbing the same paved road a couple of gears higher, I'd have to guess about 30-40% less rolling resistance. I went about 30% further in the same time today, and that's on a combo of pavement, dirt and gravel roads. That's significant.
It still bugs me that you need a compressor or a CO2 inflator to get a tire to bead up, but they sure rolled smooth when inflated. And the tread seems to be better centered on the tire carcass than the Nevegals which tend to wobble/hop quite a bit.
What a grand day out....

Way to go Mims...did you have fun?
DFL?
It was a flat course with some whoop-de-dos and some tight little turns. We were scheduled to do 10 laps. The registration was fairly unorganized and we didn't start until about 11:30. Near high noon in the tropics. So it was hot. I just kept pedalling. I should have put on the 16T cog but rode it in the 18T and spun out. I stopped at a checkpoint my last lap to drink water, and let 3 slower riders pass me. I was suppose to have 3 laps to go, so I was pacing myself and reeling them back in, but then they stopped the race when I went through the start/finish gate.

After today's race, I cleaned up and relaxed for a bit, then decided needed to get something to eat. My wife was out of town with the car, so I got back on the SS with my messenger bag, rode to one of the local Chinese restaurants, locked the Merlin outside, got an order to go including a 2-L bottle of Coca-cola, then stuffed it all into the messenger bag and rode back home to enjoy my lunch (and dinner).

i couldnt help but notice the sweep on those handlebars in the shadowbike picture. at the sixth annual Milwaukee Messenger Invitational this year, I noticed a lot more riders with handlebars that had some sweep to them. ive been riding the fuBar by Misfit Psycles on my mountain bike for a little while now, and really like the extra comfort. it seems like more and more companies and riders are realizing the benefits of some extra sweep, including comfort and increased climbing ability. i guess newer technologies are allowing greater bends in the bars, while still maintaining stiffness.

Myron is that the fuBar you have on there? Just wondering...
I was playing with my nubar today (just tilted it up slight) and adjusting brake levers and such. Wondered what the difference with the nuBar and fuBar where?
Moved my seat back a touch as I noticed myself shifting back slighltly on my rides. I put new tires on my dissey (Weirwolfs). Man this was my first time changing tires... it was fun, yet frustrating at the same time. But those tires are rockin' and my steed looks hot! Took a ride on our local private singletrack, wearing the Dirt Rag jersey that Maurice gave me at the Sea Otter.
Three other riders complimented me on the jersey.
The weather was perfect, slightly chilly, but short sleeves are fine if you keep moving, a little rain yesterday killed any dust, perfect tacky surface on the trails.
On the way back I ran into a couple of pals sitting outside the local brewpub, and had a perfect glass of Iron Springs IPA.

Commuting definitely counts. I work at a factory that has around 2000 employees. On the nicest days, there's maybe 30 people who ride bikes in to work. In the winter, there's me and one other guy. People even drag the bike racks out of the way to free up a couple of prime parking spots:mad: , so I just wheel my bike into the plant, throw some cardboard under it to catch all the muddy salt water that drips off it for the rest of the day, then oil the chain and ride home. The indoor storage keeps my seat nice and warm:) . Lots of people think I am crazy, even though the ride only takes me 25 minutes if there's a ferocious headwind. I just layer my clothes, and put my "ninja mask" on, and I'm good to go. I know a lot of people at work who literally have drives less than 5 minutes, and they still drive!?!

About 2 months ago, I bought an orbital trainer for my wife. I warned her that if I bought it, she'd have to use it. You know the story...it has been sitting idle most of the time.
I decided since we have it, I better use it. For the past 8 days, I used the orbital trainer for 20 minutes workouts. I've also been riding. On Wednesday, I went out on the SS and immediately felt different. I am slightly stronger, but way more fit aerobically. I climbed faster and easier and recovered faster.
I also think I am finally losing some weight.

I rode last wednesday too, 5 yound lads and a lass handed my ass to me at the river trail. I chose a lesurly 32/16 figuring lot's of noobs would be out and we would be moving slow. No noobs=bad news. We left the dam at the KS river and headed down to the river trail for a 8.5 mile loop. The whole time I was thinking how bad of shape I must be in. With my chest burning and legs screaming I spent the whole time trying to keep the granny's in site. Get back to the dam at Mass. street chit chat for a few then look at the time. Realize it's only been 50 minutes since we started. Despite my chest pain I felt much better knowing it was a quick loop on the trail. I dont think I've ever run that trail much faster than that, even on my 29er with 38/14 gears.
Now to find out how far it is from the dam to the trail each way. At least a mile perhaps. 1.1 miles each way. Total of bout 10 1/2.

Last summer when I picked up my Litespeed in New Mexico, I thought I was riding pretty good...considering coming from sea-level back to 6000+ feet. Yes, I felt pretty good until one day I rode with some old buddies...well not so old and I was now the old guy in the group.
Back-in-day, 15 years before, when I was at my racing weight of 180 lbs, those guys were just meer pups and could be thrashed upon at will. Last summer at 45 years old and at 215 lbs, I was the one who was suffering...especially when we approached the 9000 ft. summit of Signal Peak. Hopefully the X-training on the orbital trainer will have me better prepared for my New Mexico/North American excursions in July and August.

Yesterday actually...and it wasnt a proper mountain bike ride, but.... I did attach the kid third wheel to make my beater mountain bike a mutated tandem and I rode around the neighborhood with kids in tow for about an hour. I hit a few steep hills for the first time with my kids and it was great hearing them behind me giggle with delight as we flew down some hills. For the first time I was actually able to get my son to switch gears on the kid apparatus and get off and look at the cluster and see where the chain is. Then we rode up and down and I think I finally got him out of the notion of "What number are you in?" when discussing gears. He finally got it!!! Onward and upward from here. Its going to be a great spring and summer on the bikes. Me and the missus made a decision to not participate in any organized sports this spring. No soccer, baseball, softball... nothing but riding, hiking, camping and fishing for once instead of it being just an afterthought. Its amazing how on an evening as beautiful as it was last night the neighborhood was devoid of any kids but mine. We had a blast. Soon enough basketball and football will start back up but for this spring.........its all riding all the time!!! Next up is to start construction on the pump track in my backyard.

I'm nursing bruised ribs and a bashed shoulder thanks to a distracted female pedestrian on a cellphone and her itty-bitty yap dog on a really long leash. Bunnyhopped the dog but botched the landing. Maybe its karma for writing that FICTIONAL poem in the last DR about running over a dachshund. The real pisser was when a bystander comes up to me as I'm trying to put my shoulder back in place and says, "These are multi-use trails, you know."

Growing up in SW PA we all learned that one never swerves or in any way alters ones path to avoid collision(s) with animals. The insurance companies are all too familiar with the "swerving to miss a deer/dog" story.
Just whack 'em, and leave the fury/meaty evidence in the wreckage for the adjuster or trooper.

I did, and as I was flying along down the top of the pipe berm trail, trying to keep my mouth closed to prevent mud infiltration, I happened to inhale a bug that hit me in the uvula at about 35km/h, then tried to hang on but ended up falling on the back of my tongue, so while riding along I was trying to spit out bug pieces without stuffing it in a rut. It's hard to gargle using your Camelback as a source and ride a bike at the same time.

I haven't been yet, but give me 5 hours or so and I'll be in the trail ghetto of Houston. Riding the dirt with bombed out cars, worn out porn, and maybe a couple of empty beer cans/bottles or so. But it will be dirt and it will be good. I'll ride fast, I'll ride slow, I'll see some wildlife and forget that I'm in the fourth largest city in the nation. Then I smell some exhaust and my senses will once again be awakened to the city I love.

Rode the SS Merlin yesterday (been riding the geared bike lately). Been under a lot of stress at work and from the work on our new condo, I needed to get out alone on my bike, and what a great ride it was!
It was the "standard" afternoon ride I usually do here with the standard degrees of variability, but just riding the full rigid Merlin is so much fun. I love that old bike. My buddy. It is so light...so responsive.
I rode to the summit of our local "mountain" (only slightly more 100 meters from base to summit) and then I rode down a steep, scree-covered trail yesterday for the first time in a long time because I was feeling so good about the bike (lately I've been walking this section of trail because of this nasty, evil plant is growing at the bottom of the slope). I rode along the sea on my out-and-back route, that when I turned around, I was suddenly back at the starting point but I don't remember the stuff in between. I love that feeling.
I rode back home feeling bliss and relaxed. SS riding is fun!

Yes well we all know that I am not the best of grammer Dirt Rag students. :D
There is lots of clever terms used. I got used to the way they say things. Then of course - there were times where I was completely lost! Like did anyone know a chicken to Aussies is called a Chook? Kinda cool:D I'll have a hard time adjusting back to Canada. Life there is so relaxed - everyone is super friendly. Very Euro like my dads hometown. Not that we are not friendly in North America... we are all just too stressed!! Definate MUST trip for anyone looking to get out into wine country and enjoy some nice trails.
Course keeping on topic of riding. I definately have alot to learn still :o :( Chickened out on a few of the diamond black trails that were hanging off edges of hills and such. One wrong move and you are down and rolling. Need help to get over my fear of highs quick!
There was one single track black trail that was fun! I like totally flowed and enjoyed it... course where was the Budgie for a good photo opp? Nowhere to be found! Darn... Then there was another trail that was cool, but this riding over logs while climbing is proof that I need help and more learning... Slowly I will get it one day... no rush right? Enjoy what I can, push myself to try harder, but don't want to get frustrated. There was one downhill that I could have done, but got mad at myself for stopping and walking it...:o
Oh well. Now I am home and will be riding as much as I can with some group rides as well as learning camps.
