I have a Merlin Tiaga hardtail I would like to convert to a single speed. As it is currently dressed out in 2002 XTR brakes, shifters, drive train, and hubs, what am I looking at from a cost pespective if I wanted to convert this ride to a singlespeed?

Alright, I was going to answer this right away, but I don't know what size bolt diameter you have on those cranks. Other than that, $5 for a Shimano DX cog (assuming that's not an Al freehub body), $15-20 for a SRAM PC-7x chain, ca. $50 for a tensioner if you need it. Get a couple of used cassettes from the LBS and take them apart for the spacers. Use the granny ring bolts to attach the single chainring, which you might have to turn around since the spacers may not be long enough. I spent less than $50 on my first conversion.

You'll probably want a riser (and wider) bar, but stick with what you've got for the time being.
