if you dont already know, critical mass is a celebration of the bicycle held on the last friday of every month. most rides start at or around 5pm-5:30pm. if you live in or near a city chances are that one will be held at the end of this week. these rides are usually from 30 to 1000 riders strong and any kind of person and bike is in attendance. the pupose of these rides varries from rider to rider, i am there to promote the bicycle and to get even with the traffic that is usually pushing me around or unaware i,m even out there. info is easilly obtained using these crazy computers.

Pittsburgh's Critical Mass is this Friday, March 28 2003 at 5:30pm. Meet at the Dinosaur in Oakland, its right next to the Carnegie Museum. We'll be heading to an art show afterwards... food, art, music and film by the Indymedia.
Our website is pretty sparse at the moment, check it out at www.pghcriticalmass.org It at least tells you how to join our list-serv if interested.

Yeah, we had perfect weather also. Ended up with 80+ riders. Had a good route layed out, and ended at the art gallery we had planned on. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves...
The April ride is heading to a community space where the local IndyMedia is headquartered and where local activists tend to meet up. We're going to have a few bands play, a keg of beer, some free food.... Should be an awesome time.
Now I just need to flyer, flyer, flyer...

criticle mass used to be fun but now its just a way to piss-off motorists into killing some other biker on a future road.
belive it or not ,there are good drivers.i'd be willing to guess that half of you posting drive cars too.

pissing off motorists is not my intent, it is inevitable that motorists will be upset with delays caused by our ride. i get a kick out of the bratty attitude quickly gained by any automobilist who experiences the slightest delay, many of which are probly great drivers. but who cares about all that, and who cares what the jagurs of the world have to say(you do if your into negativity), its all about gettin out and enjoying a good bike ride surrounded by friends.

I've said this before, but I've had time to think since then.
I periodically do the Critical Mass here in MPLS, and most of the times I've done it I've seen the kind of attitude apparent in jagur's quote. When they stay small, people stay courteous, which I think is cool, but on the big ones I've been on, it becomes "getting even with traffic," which I think is stupid. I was in a ride that obstructed all 4 lanes (both directions) of a bridge. This is stupid. But when people line up 2 abreast, take a lane and ride their bikes they're following the law and demonstrating their willingness to take their rightful place in traffic.
So, I don't know. If the people at your Critical Mass are people that don't act like asses, everybody wins, but if they're a hurd of dumb punks that just want an excuse to get even with traffic, you're better off just taking your chances "demonstrating" your viability on your own. I went, I registered my opinion, it got ignored, so now I don't do it anymore. I make my statement living on my bike in traffic by myself.
But don't just say no. Everybody should give it a shot and see if it's compatible with their politics.
