I do dirt and urban on my Gack Speed Demon singlespeed, works great for it. I'm consirdering going for a Surly 1x1 though, just so I can run discs and 2.5" tires.

i used to xc all the time (not single speed though) now i can't get enough dirt jumping. i can easily kill 3 or 4 hours at the one of the local spots but 3 or 4 hours xc would probably kill me now. was worried that 32 was to old to start jumping but once you get over the mental part it's all grins:D

on friday i posted how i jump a lot on a single speed "free ride", well on sunday i ate it along with tree on a small kicker and wound up with a hole in my shin, i spent 5 hours in the er for a 30 minute ride. i also bent my brand spanking new 1x1 rigid fork. boo hoo. hope you all have better luck or skill than yours truly

There isn't too much for dirt jumping 'round here, although my community is building a skate / bike park, and part of that would be a dirt track, so I'm going to see if I can pull a preemptive strike with a shovel. Currently, I posess the ability to ride an instigator with big tires and discs (not an ss) and a haro bmx crusier. THe haro is fun to go really fast at stuff with and jump, drop, or crash into stuff.
and Thomas dude, what the hell? How is it possible to destroy a Z1 and two 1x1 forks? My original one'r fork is still rippin', and my Z2 atom bomb from '99 was too stupid to die, although Ira from chi has it now, so maybe it got smart. I think it was still going last I checked though.

my dirt jumping bike is named charlene she is a cannondale with a broken frame the seat tube wound up getting snapped right above the top tube so her seat is just duct taped to teh top tube (this is the reason she made the transision from mountain bike to dirt jumper) she is a ss because the derailur broke the large chain ring on the front was used as a bashgaurd till it resembles a saw blade (as in all the teeth either point out or in none are straight and the wholething is bowed and now she is salty mean angry bitter as shit bike that has one working brake one working gear no seat and can even be lit on fire and like it. for pics go to my website Klunker League Now (http://www.klunkerleaguenow.com) go to bikes she is on the left side part way down and then go to adventures and check out torys comet the cannon is one mean ride.

Holy shit thomas, you make me laugh out loud. -smooth=flow=momentum- it works for your first no hander or crushing some punkass roadie/expert class gear dependant in the second lap of a your local muddy slugfest.

i am not...momentum i am. how i kill forks? 200 pounds of crush power doing bad, unskilled, awkward, foolhardy landings over and over and over again. the z1's did make it through two rebuilds and currently reside on a friends rarely used bike. if you hit trees hard enough head on, any steel fork will bend, thats why i wont buy, say a vicious cycle rigid fork, thats a lot of beans! oh and on the by and by, i make myself laugh out loud...right after i cry out loud, pick gravel, sand and fat cells out of the holes in my shin, or when i take two weeks to walk without a limp...and thats all within two less than 1 hour rides...youd have to see this menace to believe it...

for those of you who dont believe old TBrown about his distructive relationships with bicycle componentry, let relate some things to you.I ride with this bruiser named T Brown and i have witnessed the slaughter of a moab frame a hookooikoo frame and 3 yes 3 sets of forks , countless bottom brackets to include a race face bb. when he says he is momentum its only because regular rim brakes cant stop this guy. never in your life have you seen such an out of control beast. if you ride with us rule #1 is dont follow tom

Sounds like someone is part of a gravity abnormality. I recommend avoiding contact with trees head on. Perhaps glancing blows or avoidance might work best. perhaps some disc brakes might help?

thats a good idea but unfortunately toms 1x1 isnt disk compatable. But the new intagator we are building for him is.We got a good set of mechanicals so hopefully we can slow him down a bit. now all we have to do is work on his landings.

Perhaps a small flashing warning light printed with 'pull up' and klaxon might help. Time, baby. It just takes time. That and some tough equipment.

yeah, i'm running a Gack speed demon too. it is a sweet frame. i have three hardtails, two dual susp. bikes, and a 20" (fit). i've been riding this bike the most since i've built it up. i'm on my second fork for it, i had a white bros fork and now a z1 freeride. i kind of came into those forks by happenstance(good hook ups) but am planning on a dj fork with 20mm axle. then it should be dialed for everything i want to throw at it..
i'm running it ss with profile cranks and a s&m euro bb. its a nice frame, kudos to kris G. i am running hayes front and rear, and the best thing is , regardless of where i run my wheel in the dropouts(rear entry) the caliper engages the rotor really well. really good pad/rotor contact. (way better than the azonic ds-1 i used to have, where you had to remove the caliper to fix a flat) the only upgrades i want to do would be a sealed bearing rear hub. i have an xt with a solid axle on it with chain tensioners, but loose ball and cone hubs just seem to keep coming loose after extensive riding. that, and i love doing 180 bunny hop- to fakie type tricks, which put a lot of side to side torque on it.
this bike is fun to dirt jump. since our local trails were plowed, i put away the 20. the new trails we're working on are just too bumpy right now for little wheels.
i've got a specialized P.1 on layaway right now. i'm about to pay it off. there are a lot of things that i will upgrade once i break, like the hubs and fork. but i was wondering what kind of stuff i should add on before i get into it. i was thinking a chain guide and a bash gaurd since it doesn't come with either. but do i really need a chain guide with a SS?
