I think I know, it sounds like what used to do. My Bridgestone MB-4 has taken me over numerous travels that were not there, but the riding was fun, (Both urbam and rural.)

Thanks.

When I first started riding, there were not a lot of 'sanctioned' trails. we just rode where ever there happened to be a path. That could be freeriding. But I think in the current sense, it probably applies more to off trail chutes and crazy drops and the like ( I wonder how it is any different from 'downhill?).
But to me, it's more like riding at or just above your limits (more a mindset than a movement?). Pushing your own envelope. Be it in an urban setting, trails, or traffic. Picking the best lines you can, and being able to handle the situation should you pick the wrong one. Bunnyhops, jumps, slick "think fast" maneuvering that just saves your ass.
So, really, I'm not sure what the term freeriding actually applies to. I only know: I have a mountain bike, and ride it to death. The "free" part is just kind of a given.
Take care,

I thought freeriding was a bike that was a cross between a downhill bike (able to handle and down hill cruise) and an XC bike (light enough, lock-out suspension...so you can get up the hill)

Interesting how it is a marketing genre, that people aren't sure what it is.....

is the new Mountain Cross free riding?

That's the cool thing about not only the term freeriding, but mtn biking also. It's so versitile. There is a lot gray area between strictly x-country and downhill riding, freeriding can be applied to whatever doesn't fit the the old paradigms.
Plus, I gotta admit, it's a very cool term.

From the American Heritage Dictionary:

Free: At liberty; not bound or constrained. Not under obligation or necessity. Not affected by a given condition or circumstance. Costing nothing; gratuitous. Unobstructed. Taking undue liberties. In a free manner. Without charge.
Ride: To be conveyed by a vehicle. To sit on and drive. To take part in or do by riding.

Freeriding is a term conjured up by evil bike manufacturers trying to give the "goota haves" another kind of bike to purchase. Some people need to have the newest and best of everything and if there is someone who tells them that freeriding is a new thing then they will be jumping at the bit to get one. DONT BE BRAINWASHED!! Fight the evil ones..
