Complete bike preferred; not wasted (i.e. still has rides left); upgrading an option (no propietary stuff); 29er would be cool too; <$650

disc tabs or no tabs?

you can pick up a sweet, steel rocky mountain steel hardtail frame from nybikes for less than 75...http://www.nycbikes.com/item.php?item_id=407

That Rocky Mountain frame is for 700c wheels, I have been told.

Yep, the Route 66 was a city commuter bike in off road style, setup for 700C tires. Last made in Canada in 2000, then gone forever. A friend of mine still has one in her basement.

oddly enough then, it works fine with 26" wheels. I have a friend who's built one up using a 4" travel suspension fork.

also - review of the geometry/sizing link indicates 26 " wheels in parenthesis.. may have to see if it will fit 29" wheels..

If it's a 26" Route 66, that would make it a 2000 frame, it appears they switched to a 26" wheel size in 2000. In 1998 and 1999 they were a 700C wheel (my friend has a 1998 model).

I stand corrected.

My good friend who advises me on all things Rocky Mountain notified me that there was an error and that this is, in fact, a mtb frame that accepts only 26" wheels.

nice frame for the money, nonetheless. pretty lines, nice size tubing. i'd bite and pick up another, but i'm well past n+1 right now.

Me too. I was wishing it was 700c...

It's odd that someone has found a stash of 2000 model year Rocky Mountain Route 66 frames that weren't finished and decaled for assembly, especially since it's the only model year that was 26" and 700C.

It has a Reynolds 520 CrMo tube set, and long chain stays at 445mm (compared to 425mm for the XC 26" steel hardtails like the Hammer/Blizzard), so it is a touring bike with rack/fender eyelets.
