I have had my first mountain bike converted to a singlespeed primarily for commuting and bar hopping. I really love it but it never went off-road. I even put the skinniest Serfas tires I could find on it. It's fun, it's easy and looks like poo so nobody will want to try to steal it. Today, a buddy of mine called to see if I wanted to ride. All the cards were in place, nice day, daughter having a late nap, wife had things to do around the house...all except the bike issue. Both of my functioning mountain bikes were not living up to their titles. So I threw some knobbies my single speed and hoped i could keep up. Lo and behold I did fine. At times my thumbs and forefingers attempted to prepare for the trail ahead but there was nothing to click. I love it and think it's time for another singlinator.

Isn't it a great feeling? I just realized how much I love riding my Surly 1x1 last night. I've been out a few times by myself on it, but decided to take it out with the local after-work group ride last night instead of my Giant. I'll admit, I was nervous driving to the meeting point; unsure of how I was going to perform. (Good thing the Giant still has a flat or I may have choked and grabbed it instead!) I definitely wasn't leading the pack, but I was doing a damn good job of keeping up, sometimes even signaling to bonking riders ahead that I was approaching and to move their sorry a$$es! I didn't get that cocky, but I felt like I could've! The best feeling though was after the ride when some of the other "geared" folks commended me on my performance, knowing that I was relatively new to the whole thing.
I hope I don't ever not ride the Giant again. It's a great bike and I paid way too much for it to just sit around...
