What is a decent but cost effective fender that is easy to mount on my commuter? Any suggestions?

Political signs or maybe Fed Ex boxes...

Just ask the Mountain Turtle:

I have Rhode Gear fenders on 1 mtb and Planet Bike Freddy Fenders on a touring bike and a mtb. The Freddy's seem to be better designed, but both brands are good fenders, I think I paid around $20 for each set.

I use the SKS fenders. They run about $25 for a set, look good and have a quick release in case something gets stuck, so you don't go flying over the bars.

Most bike shops and REI stock em.

I'll second the SKS. Add some homemade mudflaps to them and you'll have great coverage. I only get a little spray off the them on my shoes even with soaked roads.

yep. I use the SKS shockboard series, love em. A clip sheared off, SKS replaced it for free. 3 winters later and it's still hasn't broke, which says something considering I recommend products at MEC to people based on which ones I've broken and their modes of failure.

Ive had the SKS shockboards break during the winter twice (clip broke on front fender both times) and switched. I have been running planet bike clip ons and full bolt on for over 4 years without any issues at all.

A company called Singletrack Solutions, makes the "mud flap" which is a piece of plastic that pops into your seat rails in about 3 seconds, pops back out in about 10, and costs like 5$. I saw it in DR Microbytes about a year ago. Oh yeah, they sent me two of them for my 5$ too.
Can't beat it.

are you looking for something removable (but likely flimsy) or permanent and sturdy? What's cost effective mean to you? $0 or $60?

If you want something simple and unmodified, try these:

personally I roll on ESGE with the stainless hardware and my own home-built fender extensions installed on the bottom.

My LBS has a decent supply of old 3 speed fenders that junk up your commuter but can, with a little ingenuity, fit nicely and hold up well. Or a cheap old Goodwill bike can have the fenders taken off and they're better built, albeit slightly heavier, than the Planet Bike or others.

my weapon of choice on the commutes - have about three of 'em in service right now. they can shatter in the cold pretty easy but otherwise no complaints.

I dunno, I had one of those once, but gave up on it pretty quick. They do shatter very easily. Also if you hit them they'll spin around on the seatpost a bit and you'll have to set them straight again before they can do their job.

But the biggest deal for me with non-full-coverage fenders is that they don't protect your front derailleur, chain, shoes, bottom bracket etc. from water, sand, mud, salt, slush... whatever which is a big part of the purpose of fenders. Sure your butt stays dry, but everything else still suffers.

I second or third for that matter the SKS shockboard series. They have a mounting kit for $9.00 that allows you to move fenders from bike to bike which is pretty cool.:D
