It occurred to me a while ago that I havn't taken the bus in 4 years and my truck has been broken a fair amount this year, and I still get to work. Totally not dependant on it, or the public transit system at all. I love life with bikes...

Can you guys really do this all year? It was so bad here yesterday (w/ snow / slush) that it took me an hour and a half to ride home, and I nearly killed myself a dozen times. Hats off to you guys. Does it ever get so bad that you are forced to take the bus / get a ride home from work?

If it wouldn't be for driving to trails on the weekends my wife and I could probably be a single car household. Sure it would be inconvinient but I think we could pull it off. I filled up once this year and still have a quarter tank left.

my mindset is -life is suffering and disappointment anyway, so why not ride. when it gets real shitty i take my mtn bike. its a much slower commute, but it means i get to do little urban assault, so it makes it a little more fun.
i'm looking at a $1000 garage bill (after dropping $800 at xmas) and seriously wondering "why do i need a truck?"

yeah, it takes me like an hour and 15 minutes to get home with lots of snow or slush whereas it takes 35 minutes in the summer, but I don't mind. Time to think and ponder. The nearly getting killed thing is eliviated by tire choices and practice.

Seriously,
I wish I had put on a different set of tires yesterday morning. That was definitely part of the problem. I've been riding fairly consistently since august, but I still get a bit freaked when it's time to get home. Always get the feeling like I'm gonna get whacked...
