It seems like a lot of people this days are using physical fitness not as a rehab tool, but as an alternative addiction. Rehab is taking a long, cold, hard look at who and what enable destructive behavior, not simply replacing it with riding, although I'm sure riding won't hamper recovery;) .02
This is the big thing with rockstars especially. I know most of Velvet Revolver Muy Tai Kickbox religiously, and Trent Reznor has gotten HUGE since his battle with the bottle ended.
Good luck to your friend. Meth/speed is the new crack it seems.

People who cross the line from recreational use to addiction are generally predisposed to addiction anyway. To take the drug away and offer nothing in its place is asking for failure. Replacing the negative addiction (speed) with a positive addiction (biking/exercise) is one of the most successful ways of beating drugs for those with natural addictive personalities. Biking would work great. Trade a negative addiction for a positive one and then don't become a reformed bum. Nothing is more annoying than the preachy ex-addict.;) Good luck to your friend.

Try Downhill riding. You'll feel like your on speed, minus the narcotic. :D
It can be just as dangerous when you crash...

And just as expensive:eek: Seriously though that's not a bad idea. At least the adrenaline rush is there. Alot of recovery programs suggest treating yourself to material things or hobbies with the money you would normally spend on the drugs as a reinforcement for staying clean. Depending on the drug that could be a fuggen nice bike.

Have thought about that,I race a Santa Cruz VP Free in Masters DH,usually way off the back due to lack of training ,maybe we can both benefit from the practise.:)

are you talking bikes here, or are you talkin' 'bout drugs? If it's the former, I could speak volumes on the topic. If it's the latter, I'm afraid I haven't a clue.

That's a hellish trap to spring on your own leg, worse than a salt water croc bite.

I did speed pretty regularly in my past life. That crap is poison as you know. I would worry about your friends health, but just so you know it's probably not a good idea for him/her to just jump on a bike. They need to really quit first and probably give their body some time to adjust to like not having speed all up in it. I can't imagine riding and being on speed, my heart hurts just thinking about it!
I've used riding as a replacement for those things but I still don't live a really clean lifestyle - at least compared to those racey types. Pot and beer are a regular occurance in my life. I should quit doing both but damn I'm weak and life is hard. Least I'm off the hard shit... been 6 years now!
wee... hey it's all a journey and we all get through it differently. save the DARE crap. I know the drill.

interesting. I've been feeling out some really flavorful lagers lately. IPAs tend to be too hoppy for me lately. Might be the season?

we all know mtn biking is the bees knees -but in terms of battling addiction, its just a replacement behavior. for some it may work, but if she truly has a serious chemical dependency, biking is just pleasant distraction. addiction is like a disease -it has to be treated not glazed over or ignored. mtn biking combined with some kind of ongoing counselling would be a better long term idea, but the counselling has to be ongoing -not a 2-3month gig.
funny how good we are at giving advice we don't take.

thanks PI ,yeah ,I know it's gunna be a long hard climb outta the sh!thole, but I got nuthin better to do with my time (ish!!) I see a lot of potential in this girl so really want to give her a chance to have a good go at life without the crap other people from her mis-guided past have dumped on her.She knows how I feel about the stuff n what it's doing to her,but I know I can't force anything on her so I'm just there to offer support when/where it's needed.
I do believe she can beat it ,she just needs someone with a positive mindset beside her.
Sounds like you have a good mindset WunSpeed. Encourage her (if she isn't already!) to find new friends and not just your friends either. That way if things between you and her don't work out (I'm getting a "relationship potential" vibe from you) she still has people around her who will help keep her from just going back to the old ways.
