Well, why not? I found that I can easily fit a bike in my car trunk by just removing the front wheel. So now it's going to live there full time, always ready for a ride opportunity. I still have room for groceries, beer, etc. too! I knew there was a reason I needed another bike, I just didn't know why, yet. Need to switch my wife's key with the valet one now.

Ken drives an AVALON! What a conformist!!!

A singlespeed with an EBB or dropout sliders would be very perfect for this.

What's the trunk bike for? Just in case you get in a bind selling radios out of the back of your car? :D

I paid $200 for that car Hounds. Had to rebuild the transaxle. I've actually owned about everything in the product line at one time.

To be honest, I used to leave my Schwinn on my bike rack almost 24/7 when I was in school...it sure made it hard to go to class on those nice days. Now my trunk is filled with work boots, extra clothes, a hard hat, Goretex jacket and pants, a metal clip board, etc.

BTW, that's the way to do it. Buy a car that no one else wants to fix really cheap and then drive the wheels off of it!

I wouldn't recommend throwing a bike with hydraulic disc brakes into your trunk...you might have to bleed them often.

cool. I've been thinking of trying to find some way of semi-permenantly securing a bike to my jeep (theftproof) for the "oh that looks cool, I wish I had a bike with me" times.

I always keep the bike in the trunk. More stealth, more secure, more aerodynamic.
In the past when shopping for a car, I usually look at the trunk to see if a bike will fit.
In small cars, it necessary to take off both wheels, and sometimes pull the seat post.
The Litespeed fits nicely in the trunk of my Kia Rio. Plus there is room for monkey boy's Schwinn BMX.

I'm inspired. I don't have a car though. I need an extended cab bike.

Hey,,, How's about this,,, a '72 Ford Galaxy 500...
Wew had one when i was a kid... You could put 2 BMX bikes without removing the wheels, some lawn chairs, a Hibachie grill, and a few other trikets,,,, all while still having the spce for a full size spare tire!
My brother and I could both nap comfortably on the back seat. (rougly the size of a living room sofa) The oly down side to that car was the big 460 got a whoping 8mpg....

Mims,

You got S&S Couplers on that there Litespeed? It should fit anywhere if ya do.

The Dahon that was reviewed in the last issue of DR was a sweet bike. I almost bought one. I'm holding out for when I take a frame building class or can afford to buy a custom job.

Good plan! Better gas mileage, too.

Jahnov, I sure hope your welds are much better than mine. I'm decent with steel, so-so with aluminum and a disaster with titanium. I think I just need more practice. On the other hand, I found out recently that you can solder titanium, it just takes some patience and some skill.

Jahnov,
Yes, thats a 2000 Litespeed Toccoa retrofit with S & S couplers. I live and work overseas and wanted a bike I could easily travel with. This project took a few years to accomplish due to my indecisiveness. At first I considered retrofitting my 1996 Merlin, but it is the last of the Rob Vandermark era Merlins and I couldn't bring myself to having the frame hacked.
I considered a Dahon, but they just didn't seem bomber enough. They have a weight limit, 230 lbs, and I hover around 220. The Flo looks like a sweet bike, gets good reviews, but at the same time I was getting serious about a Flo (found one on Long Island on an E-bay business) I started looking at options; a used bike that I could retrofit.
I like the ride of Ti and the strength of it. I found a complete XT equipped Toccoa on MTBR and got it for a fair price (I feel) and had the seller ship it to Bilenky Cycle Works in Philadelphia for the retrofit. Total cost of the project, including the hardside travel case, was slightly less than the price of a Flo. Its a great bike, and I've been happy with it. I showed it to Steve Garro (Coconino Cycles) last summer and he said it was a way better deal and bike than the Flo.
Now I want all my bikes fitted with S & S couplers. Been thinking of getting a Coconino X/touring bike and would defininately get it fit with the couplers.

Edit add: Now that I have the travel bike, I want to take trips with it. First trip scheduled is Scotland in August!

Myron's the Tony Soprano of car radios, several dead ones in the trunk of his car... How the heck do you explain that when you're pulled over and they ask to look in the trunk?

It they ask to see what is in the trunk, you ask them to see their search warrant.

Nah,been cleaning out the garage. I told one of the used car wholesalers at work bout them. He offered me $5 each. Factory cassette players aint worth shit. I love my music,so every car I own gets a stereo upgrade.

Mims,

I agree completely that the S&S Couplers are way stronger and more reliable.

My dream bike (well one of them anyway) would be a custom Independant Fabrications Ti Planet Cross with Track ends, Couplers, and rack and fender mounts.

One day.....
