Hey Cyclenaut, thanks for the link. Looks to be an interesting place to be, too bad I won't be in Cali then. Would have been cool to check it out.
I went to some of the frame builders sites that are listed on NAHMBS website. In the gallery one frame in particular interested me. Too bad it was only a small section of the bike, it had what looked to be some sweet engraving on a pewter looking frame.

If it lookes anything like this, its a Merlin. Beautifulicious.

I'll be there again this year.
Last year I uploaded a gallery of images...

This year promises to be bigger and better.

Holy crap that's a lot of engraving. I wonder if the tube walls have to be oversized to account for the loss of thickness where it's engraved? Technically the tube is only as strong as its weakest (thinnest?) section...
But you're right - absolutely beautilicious.

I'm guessing two dollar signs more than what you typed. ;)

When Merlin says "The cost and man hours involved were incredibly expensive, and thus a design like this is unfortunately cost prohibitive in terms of a retail offering", you just know that you're likely looking at a very large number of dollar signs.

Well I must admit that it is indeed a nice piece of art. Almost too nice to want to ride it.
Thanks for the link Rocky.

That Merlin is too nice to ride. It'd be a real pain in the arse to keep it clean. A standard Merlin is artsy enough.
BTW I'd love to attend that show.

It is a road bike...but think of a 50 mph decent through a hairpin turn when your head tube/top tube junction snaps (happened on the Specialized Allez Epic CF frames during the Tour of the Gila in the early 1990's).
Fortunately Ti doesn't catastrophically fail like aluminum or carbon fiber. It'd more likely crack slowly.

Mibres, those cracked Spesh's were due to a reaction between the epoxy they were using at the time and the metal in the frame. On pre-broken frames you could actually see where the epoxy was starting to bubble out of the joint.

I know...I got rid of mine shortly after those failures and bought a steel Bridgestone.
