Hi there
I recently bought a Giant Alias 07 model. I'm getting this kind of vibration noise coming from somewhere near the front deraileur (Ithink but really have no idea). Its not when braking and only happens when I am not pedaling. I thought it might be my bottle holder but its not. I took it back to the shop and they can't find what it is. I'm, not sure they tryed that hard, if at all.
I've had a good look around to see if anything is loose but there doesn't seem to be. Anyone got any ideas?
Any tips would be much appreciated
cheers

That description would make it a bit of a challenge to track down. Can you break down the vibration/noise description with a bit more detail? Definite metal to metal noise? do you feel any vibration when you hear the noise, does it happen in conjunction with anything you can feel in the drivetrain, or through the seatpost or bars?

How consistent a problem is it for you on the bike? Does it happen all the time or only in some specific conditions? Only on some particular road surface condition? Is it something you can demonstrate to the mechanic in the shop parking lot?

Myron wants to know what a derailleur is...

Who wants odds on tire rub...

Is it a hum, or is it a rattle? If it is a hum, check and make sure that your tire is not rubbing against a chainstay. (you will be rubbing the paint off on the inside of the stay if it is)

good idea. I've had a frame that flexed a bit and caused rubbing when I put the power down, you could be having the opposite problem.

Thanks guys
I'll check it out some more. It seems to be usually when cornering on hard tarmac, concrete etc, which may prove to be the frame flexing. Though it sounds like metal on metal to me.
A derailleur is the thing that moves the chain. I think I spelt it differently last time but I'm sure you get the drift.....
We Australians can sometimes sound a little funny to you guys. Freakin hot here today, might head out for a dusk ride and see if I can work out where the hell this noise is coming from

If this is a new bike, I would check things like bearing adjustment or the casette kock ring not being tight. Factory assembly can sometimes be a little lax.

Thanks for that I'll take it back to the shop and suggest they check out the cassette koch ring and bearing adjustment. Good tip, I bet they won't even know what they are, ha ha (not the slackers at the shop I bought it at anyway). I figure what ever it is it will be the shops problem as the bike is only a couple of months old. Apart from this problem I am happy with what Giant has come up with for the price. It cost me around $900 here in Australia and seemed the best bike for the money. I would be interested on others thoughts about this as a friend of mine is looking at buying a MTB soon.
I'm new to forums but am impressed with the wealth of knowledge out there.
Does anyone know whether disc brakes can make noise when not braking?

Heh heh...You said 'koch ring'.

Ahem...

Next time you hear it, put your hand on the cables that run along either the downtube or top tube.

Struth, I invaded an Aussie forum a while back. Tell ya the truth only one Aussie sounds funny. The rest sound perfectly normal. It's OK,you can say pushie here.

yeah mate sounds like the front gear chucker to me..then again sport could be the anchors rubbing..but it could also be the knobs on the tyres as you lean knob buzz..never know??
have a captain cook at that one on the pushie

Does anyone know whether disc brakes can make noise when not braking?A bit of disc rub is not unusual, One piston brakes like the Hayes Sole need the inner pad set quite close to the disc rotor to provide responsive braking, but the shop can tweak that if they have the patience. If there's any frame deflection in the rear it will usually happen when cornering and the disc rub can increase.

I've got a feeling at that point in time the little noise his bicycle makes will be absolutely the last thing on his mind.:D

righteo guys its kinda funny but enough about the kock ring for now.
Ah mate, another Aussie, good to see, even if you are a croweater.
I just got back from a ride and its not just when cornering. I found a shop the other day where the people in there seem to have some clues so might take it to the stupid ones where I bought it (cause it will be free) then if they can't find it I'll take it to the cluey shop. Be happy to give em a few bucks if they can fix it.

You mentioned that you checked the bottle holder, did you check the bolts for the second water bottle? If one is slightly loose it will buzz in the threaded insert.

I was having some serious creaking and popping coming from my BB on the Litespeed, not having the BB tool, I took the bike to shop last weekend and they put in a new BB cartridge.

I took it out for a ride on Tuesday and it was still popping and creaking.

I bought anti-seize compound for the Ti threads on the S&S couplings thinking that could be the noise too, but I could feel the pop and vibration come through my shoes.

I took it back to the LBS on Saturday and using my bad Spanish I explained to the mechanic what was going on. He looked at the chain, checked for a loose crank. Turns out the pedals were dry. He lubed up the pedal threads, the seat post, and seat clamp. I felt quite stupid but now the bike is quiet.

So check your pedals.

Also check the seatpost bolt, under the saddle. If it isnt reallly cranked down, that can make some creaking and popping noises as it settles that are similar to chain-issue-noises. I had this happen and was similarly confused for some time ("I know it isnt the chainring or derailleur...").
