View Full Version : Mavic UST drilling?

So I'm building my 819 (using Sheldon Brown as a guide :) ). This is my first UST wheel. The non-UST wheels I've built always have the holes offset in the rim. These UST ones with the threaded eyelets don't seem to be alternately offset like the non-UST ones. Am I right, or am I optically confused?
As an aside, thank you Mavic for making me have to buy another tool to tighten your damn eyelets. Couldn't you have just made them standard 9mm hex?

Typically, the nipple holes are drilled at an angle on mavic's fore drilled rims instead of being offset. It serves the same purpose, but it may be difficult to identify just by looking at them. Try threading the nipples in to see if they are angled to one directon or another.

What fun would that be?

First, does anyone know the recommended spoke tension for Mavic 819 rims? I can't find contact info anywhere for Mavic.
okay, I answered my question on the second thing and deleted it because I was being a moron. :)

i do them by feel. I'll check the book and get back to ya. My XM819's are laced with 14 gauge DT's on American Classics. Outside of the AC play issues i have noticed that they flat spotted easy on square hits. Allthough a square hit is only a few times a year it happens. Mine were banged out and do not show any flop when they spin. I have gone thru one rim by overtightening the spokes.
As far as the UST goes that rim is beautiful. They whipe up in a second when changing tyres and using Stan's they seal dead tight with almost NO air loss. They can be inflated with ANY pump. I have sealed one in Jamaica with a road morph in an emergency a month ago.
enjoy the ride.

also.....the newer mavic rims feature reduced tension so air on the light side and don't go for the 100-120kgf....i'd go with more like 85-100
The new prawles are more efficient as well.
