Trying to remove the crank arm/arms to get a better look at the BB on the kids 04/05ish GF Marlin. She is getting a click at the bottom of the pedaling stroke and after inspection it appears the BB needs some attention.

Anyway, after the allen bolts are removed to expose the square mount the crank arms are still tight. (not sure what kind of BB it is).

Is this something I need to tap off with a block of wood and a hammer, or is a puller in order?

This is my first crack at working on my own bikes and I’ve been looking forward to getting the/some tools to do this sort of thing. Gotta start someplace..

You can use a puller or get some self-extracting dust covers that thread in around the bolt. The bolt becomes its own puller.

Make sure the click isn't coming from a front derailleur cable rubbing the arm every revolution...I know it sounds stupid, but it happens.

Thanks fuz, I just spent about an hour at that price point site. Is that one of the better tool sites that you know of? I worked on cars years ago so I have about everything except bike specific tools. I have to put a bunch of that stuff in the tool box soon. I guess I’ll start out with tools to deal with, cranks, Bbs, and chain rings. Then, stuff to change out cassettes (for spare wheels). And on from there..

Rockhound, I was able to isolate the noise quickly with a test drive and then a wiggle of the crank arm.

With one crank arm up and one down, pressure down on the peddle would produce the click. First thing I did was give the hex bolt a little tighten. Still had the noise. So I took the hex bolts out and gave a little tap with a hammer and a piece of wood to see if I needed a puller. Seemed too tight so I asked you guys about the puller..

I put it back together so it wasn’t laying around the garage while I found tools/had tools shipped. But no noise after I put it back together. Maybe just a loose crank arm and tapping helped it seat when put back together???

Still, I didn’t like not having tools that I needed.. Gotta change that..

This is one of the most comprehensive bike tool sites (http://www.biketoolsetc.com/).

If you're just diving into bike work have a look at the Park Tools Bike Repair book (http://www.biketoolsetc.com/index.cgi?id=66499153537&d=single&c=Books-Videos&sc=Repair&tc=&item_id=PA-BBB1).

The same thing that makes sure problems are only evident when no one else is around to see or hear it.

I looked around at the LBS (local Book Store) at some repair books but they looked way dated. That big blue book sounds more up to date. Cool!

I was hoping to use this first bike of mine to practice on but may trade it in before it needs anything. At least I can maybe take it apart and lube something up..

I’m sure I wont be so enthusiastic after I know my way around a little, but I just need to know my way around a little..

That noise was on my kids bike. We took a road ride over the weekend and it was a good noise.. I told her I would look at it when I had a chance this week. When she got home from school I told her I fixed it. That’s my story and I’m stickin to it..
