View Full Version : Dumb question about chain alignment & SS

I have been riding my old Klein (rascal with horizontal dropouts) converted to a singlespeed for a while with the shimano 7speed freehub, spacers and one cog. No problems so far. I was thinking about picking up an actual single speed hub (non-fixie) and finally ditching the old 7speed hub. Previously I used the spacers to get exactly the right chain alignment with the middle chainring up front. Should I be prepared for any battles with chain alignment/tracking when I go to the SS hub as I will still be using my original crank (just using the middle chainring)?
Thanks!

It's always worked out fine for me that way. The SS hubs that use the Cog type (http://psyclestore.com/product_info.php?products_id=138) hubs are adjustable for chainline as well.

I was actually thinking about going with the Surly non-disc hub and probably an ACS freewheel. Wasn't sure if everything would line up.
Thanks.

It usually ends up so close to where your middle ring goes that you throw on a non-ramped chainring and never worry about it ever again.

I have that same set up. I'm sure you will be happy. Chuck a Blackspire ring on your cranks and it will be bliss. If any adjustment is needed you can change your bottom bracket, but I doubt you will need to.

you can move the ring from the outside to the inside of the crank spider if necessary. you can change spindle lengths if necessary...

Perfect, thanks for the info and experiences.
I think I'll go ahead with the Surly hub and ACS freewheel. I also hadn't thought about moving the chainring to either side of the cranksupports. Hopefully that will give me enough flexibility, as this old Klein has a press-in bearing bottom bracket, so it isn't an easy swap out.
Thanks again for everyones guidance!

Someone (http://www.psyclestore.com/) has ACS freewheels on sale I think.

Thanks for the sourcing suggestion. I was also looking at webcyclery:
http://webcyclery.com/product.php?productid=16135&cat=424&page=1
and BeyondBikes (they are very close to where I live):
http://www.beyondbikes.com/bb/ItemMatrix.asp?GroupCode=CM%2DCAS%2DACS1 215&MatrixType=1
as they both offered an aggressive price with a wide variety of sizes.

I am familliar with those press-fit bottom brackets. A Trek/klein dealer can order different length replacement spindles and put them in for you. They did it in a lot of frames and the spindles (as of 6 months ago) were still available

Cool. I'll keep that in mind, hopefully I won't need it!
