I just picked up my first pair of Hayes (HFX 9 XC's) and I am totally miffed!!!
The deal is when I tried to center the rear caliper about the rotor I thought I had it... and BLAMMO... as soon as I squeezed the lever one piston pushed out and wouldn't readjust properly. Thus the outboard piston went back in and the inboard piston stays out too much or enough to cause much drag. So, I removed the pads and pushed the "outward piston" back in its bore then all seemed well.
But as soon as I tried to reinstall/recenter the caliper about the rotor AGAIN the same thing happened...?
Ultimately (at the rear so far) the inboard piston is moving more than the other and not self-adjusting as it should!

My next guess is air in the system or sending it back to retailer. Any suggestions???

Thanks,

Me

have you tried this,

loosen the two bolts that allow the caliper to move side to side. grab the brake, make sure the caliper is moving when you do this. With the brake still engaged tighten the two bolts. Sometimes this works to center the rotor between the pads.

Still it seems odd that the pistons aren't engaging equally.

someone w/ more experience can chime in...

It sounds like one of the pistons is stuck. There are a bunch of posts on mtbr.com about how to move it/them back.

I had Hayes 9's, and replaced them with Avid BB7s. I'm much, much happier.
