I commute through a city park and a college campus.

There are people on the trails, people with cell phones, dogs and iPods. So the ol "Hey mind if I pass" doesn't always work. Actually it almost never works.

I have been using a bell. The bell most of the time is met with suprise and a smile. First because they think it is a 6 year old girl coming at them, and then by it being a grown ass man ringing a bell... It cuts through cell phones and iPods nicely.

But one in every 20 rings is met with anger. They yell, make some smart ass comment. Its weird. Its just an example of how you can never please everybody. And some people are just bitter mother ****ers.

I think I'll keep using the bell. Most people smile.

When I know I'll be on a trail with hikers or pedestrians (especially tourists from various parts of the world who don't understand "on your left"), I have a quick release on one of these. I honk it about 40-50' away and they always react like they're being attacked by a giant prehistoric goose.

The brass Incredibell is the best. I think I need one for my road bike in CF... but I doubt it will sound as good.

i'll be getting a ZOUNDS soon; until then, i have to save the breath to holler, "comin' 'round!" ('on your left' makes these monkeys around here MOVE to the left).

'on your left' makes these monkeys around here MOVE to the left)Yes, I like to say "On your left" and then when they move that way, I usually add "or the right, whatever it takes..."

The other one I love to see is when one half a pair of pedestrians spots you coming, so they move to one side, and the other person, still oblivious, just swaps sides with them, as though they had no idea why someone would just suddenly move to the side of a trail.

Or when both people turn and look at you but neither of them move far enough apart to ride between them, and neither makes an effort to move to one side. Deer in the headlights.

Or when someone has a dog and they are busy telling the dog to "come here" and the dog is standing square in the path, but the braindead owner won't make a move to get the dog under control.... "blah blah blah Ginger".

I have started using a bear bell on my trail rides around here, despite the fact that there aren't any bears. The part of the local trail where I encounter the most people has countless half-blind corners, and so many roots that I find it difficult to ding a bell and control the bike, plus I like to have a finger or two on both of my brake levers in case there's someone coming the other way. The guy I ride with hates the bearbell though. He says it sounda like Santa and his reindeer coming down the trail, which makes him think of winter::p
