It's Bike to Work week.
Here at Trek, we get triple the mileage credit if we ride to work. That's $12 per day rather than $4 per day.
Made it in 50 minutes door-to-door this AM, thanks to a killer tailwind. I'm betting on 90 minutes return trip.

brilliant.
add to that tax credits at the state and federal level for your general 'green-ness' and 'healthy-fit-life-ness' and we are on to something.
getting paid to ride your bike...imagine the possibilities...

commute is 60 k approx roundtrip
gas is 1.07-1.10/L in ottawa right now.
every day i bike to work saves me 8 bucks
40 bucks /week which i can put directly towards beer

Holy crap, Cupcake! You get PAID to ride a bicycle? Well f*ck me running. If I even TRIED that shit (not that I could; my job is like 90 miles down the Interstate) I'd probably get hooted and hollered at, run off the road by some inbred in an F-shitfifty, some hick's spit cup thrown out the window at me...
F*cking PAID to ride a goddam bicycle to work. Damn, f*cker. Who did you have to blow to get that job?

that's great! not only do you save the $3-something in gas each way, but you get a little cash to cover things like morning coffee, lunch, etc that you can't bring with you on a bike. my only complaint about commuting (20miles each way, do it 1 or 2 times a week when its nice) is that I save $6 in gas, and spend $10-12 in coffee and lunch. but it's not really about the money, is it? :)

with gas prices being what they are NOW, you're starting to see a point of savings by simply commuting. going CAR-FREE is where the savings waits! even if i ate all the money (in food) that i save from not gassing up, i still save in reduced maintenance costs, no insurance, no registration and no health club to stay fit. for some, it would also mean lower medical costs, as they would have fewer doctor visits for "minor" ailments.(not for me, i have VA coverage)
funny how some people like to claim that because we don't have to have insurance/license for a bike that we are somehow "lesser" users of the road. but the line in the sand is the law, not opinion, so these folks need to quit smoking their condiments. (hey, it looks like oregano....)

"Bike to work week" started off great. Monday was full of beauty and a brisk breeze that kept me cool. Bad fortune was on the horizon though, seeking me like a scout. Tuesday arrived with gleeful showers that failed in keeping me away from that aluminum horse of mine.
"I will ride on and they will say great things! Rockhopper today you hop rocks!"
I broke my rear wheel.
Then I quit my job.
"Bike to work week" started off great. I suppose that bad fortune scout rallied some friends and claimed victory over me.
