Amazing story and proof that helmets save lives. I met a dad with a group of kids riding on some gnarly trails on Sunday. None of them had a helmet. I didn't want to embarass the guy, so I pulled him aside and suggested he get them helmets and even offered to steer him to local bike shop that would have sold them at below cost. He said "thanks," but later I saw them on the trails with no protection.
In 1984, I had a bad crash jumping my horse. I landed on the top of my head and the force cracked the transverse process of my C6 vertebra (same as Superman, only his whole C6 and spinal cord were damaged). Had my head been less than an inch either left or right, I would have been paralyzed or dead. Helmets work, even if you're riding slow or stopped. Here's an experiment: put a cantelope in your helmet and drop it (upside down) at head-height from your bike. Then drop the melon from the same spot without a helmet. That's your brain leaking out on the ground.

I'm a little skeptical of truck running OVER his head, 3500 pounds for a small one, even going slowly, is lots of force. Things happen pretty damn fast, not suprised if he got confused with his head getting squished out of the way by the helmet collapsing. Still, amazing story. I hate motorized runners of lights, especially those F***ing fedex trucks.

Also, brake endo on pavement? Get your weight back and watch the intersections! Betya he's not gonna make that mistake again...

Everyone needs to learn to ride first on a fixie I swear...

I was thinking the same thing — the front of the helmet looked in tact and only the back was crushed. But you're also right that he's still damn lucky.

My wife pulled into the garage in our superlight Saturn SL2 and completely flattened my Giro E2. Lessons learned: don't leave your expensive polystyrene shit laying around after a ride, & don't place your head under the tire of a motor vehicle for any reason...

...Or hand for that matter: Back in high school I was rotating the tires on my 55 Chevy & as I put my hand under the front tire to ease tension on the last lugnut, the car slipped off the jack stands and sat on my hand for 10 minutes until my Dad got down there to jack it back up. Funny though, he was frantic & I was telling him not to mess my bumper up too much. Never thought a hand could look that flat on one side & show a perfect BF Goodrich pattern on the other. :)
