I just finished my first jury duty today. Actually sat on a jury and listened to testimony in a criminal case. We reached a unanimous verdict and the guy will do 30 years in jail.
I was really surprised when I was picked to be on the jury. The process seems pretty random. I can say it is nothing like Law & Order.
This case had a lot of local media coverage, which I read thru this afternoon. I am a little disturbed at how the media got alot of facts wrong. I wasnt expecting prize winning reporting, but I did assume what was reported would be accurate.
Anyway, just sharing.

I was the foreman of a jury trying two cases of armed bank robbery back in 1996. You're right - it is not like Law & Order. I actually enjoyed it quite a bit. We spent more time in the jury room than the court room since the attorneys and judge seemed to be in conference constantly. I recommend serving if you are called. If you don't want to serve but get called down for jury selection anyway, just tell the attorneys that Only God Can Judge, roll your eyes around a time or two, and they will get you out of there in a hurry.

I've been summoned at least ten times in the last three years, and have yet to serve. I'd be happy to. I'd kinda like to see the process from the other side for a change.

People who don't read newspapers are uninformed.

People who read newspapers are misinformed.

I've been removed from the jury duty pool for almost seven years now. Ahhh it's nice.

Seriously, no trolling at all. Why is it nice?

I got a summons last summer while at my mom's house. I answered the questionair honestly. When it asked about for transportation assistance to and from the courthouse, I checked YES. When it asked for the milage to and from the courthouse, I put 3000 miles. Hey I was honest!

Screw that. Yeah, I know, "civic duty, blah blah blah", but I hear the money sucks. Who's gonna pay the bills and feed my family while I'm sitting there with my thumb up my ass, listening to a couple of crooked pettifoggers going at it?

Just sayin'.

I was only joking. I get subpoenaed for court way more now, than I ever got called for jury duty. When you work in law enforcement they pull your name from the jury pool. Most defense attorneys aren't too keen on having one of us in the jury box. Plus we know too much about the case or criminal history to be unbiased anyway.

I've only been summoned once, and they filled the box before I was up for voir dire.

I'd like to serve someday, just to see what life is like on the other side of the jury box. I think it would really help in my chosen field...

Served on a jury for a narcotics trial once. Three days of trial, two days of deliberation. All over an oz. of weed. The arrest had been two years previous, and the prosecutor put together such a shoddy case we acquitted the poor sap.

He was no Boy Scout, but the defense shot the prosecutions testimony full of holes, and one of the pros. witnesses was a real piece of slime that was not to be trusted. He seemed more motivated by his immunity deal than justice.
