Yeah, so the other day at work I was walking my bike down the escalator and it just popped in my head, "I want to ride this thing!" So, aside from safety and image concerns, has anyone done this, how did it go, and what to look out for?

There's a picture floating around of some DR staffer riding down an escalator or stair case at Interbike 2006 if I'm not mistaken.
You might start a new lift access riding poach, as you could ride it up the other way too.

Never done it. I'd be a little worried about the movement causing an endo

Get in touch with Nathan Rennie at Santa Cruz ,he did it for an ad in mba a couple of years ago, didn't look too hard ,the usual hang on and hope attitude should work:)

yeah, so I was thinking and perhaps it would be possible to ride down and "up" escalator and be staying still

i was thinking it would be really cool to track stand on one of those moving walkways. in theory i'd be static on my bike, but still moving. it'd probaly look pretty neat.

I don't know how riding an escalater would be any differnt than a flight of stairs

How about a dedicated bike escalator...

I rode down the "up" escalator inside the Venetian at Interbike a few years ago. Don't let your arms rub the rubber railing or else you get wicked rugburn. I got a flat too... But man was it fun! No idea where that pic is though. :p It may have been published in Singletrack or just on their website somewhere.

Talking to a customer the other day, a guy that gets around in a wheelchair. He rides the mall escalators in his 'chair. He hates the cramped, crowded, slow elevator.
I asked him about the bad moment at the top. Apparently not an issue.
He says pacifying the mall Barneys that want to evict him as some kind of liability issue has been the only hitch.
Once you're on the escalator the interaction between the bicycle and "stairs" will be the same as stationary steps. Except your speed relative to the world will be slower or faster depending on... well you get it.
