So funny story. Last thursday I'm supposed to go see Medeski, Martin, & Wood. I've got the day off. I drop something off to my father at work and decide to go for a ride until everyone gets off of work. As I'm unloading my bike I get a call from my dad telling me that I've inadvertantly given him my heath insurance card, and asking if I want to come get it. I tell him no, I shouldn't need it until tomorrow. Two minutes later the front end washes out and I wreck. I get up to assess the damage and the bike is fine. Then I notice 1. the smashed mango in my pocket; and 2. that I ripped a large chunk of skin off of my left palm and that in the middle is one hell of a cut. Yeah, through the dermis and there are little pieces of sub-q fat sticking out. SH!T! I'm going to miss the concert! So, long story short, I called my dad back (not 10 minutes later) to get the card, got stitches, and caught most of the show (which totally rocked, an all acoustic set). So now I have something else to preach about when I'm ranting about helmets (the one thing I lecture about): gloves, because you need your hands. :p

Man, be very, very careful with that injury. I had a similar injury and came millimeters from serious nerve damage in my hand. I still have an arrow-shaped scar on my palm from it, and I was lucky to walk away with nothing worse than that. The doctor showed me the nerve while he was cleaning it out. I had to keep it wrapped up twice as long as usual to avoid anything getting in and hitting that nerve. Be careful! (Good news is, you can still ride when it's wrapped up!)

A BMX buddy of mine actually managed to "de-glove" his hand in a riding accident. He has this CRAZY scar now through his palm, and he gets really random intense shots of pain now.

The thought of it still turns my stomach.

So, yeah. Gloves are a good idea. Especially if you're a guitar player, because palm muting with a case of the meaty paw sucks it.

the last two times I've crashed on the road without gloves on, the only hand damage I seem to get is palm and fingertips. you can imagine the guitar playing with mashed up fingertips too. Full fingered gloves for me all the time now.
