lacking motivation to ride to work lately
tried: listening to this bike is a pipe bomb/RAMBO, looked at $3.09 gas prices, watched reports of soldiers/civillians killed in iraq, watched drivers decompensate into inhuman slobbering animals and none of it's working. went to bed early. went to bed late. ate breakfast. skipped breakfast.
i think it's the weather. or maybe the lack of caffeine. heat is no kind of fun.
anyone else lacking motivation lately?
any advise to restore it?

The answer is yes, I am also having issues getting motivated to commute. It means I have to wake up at 5am instead of 530am. It means I would not be able to sit in my car, in traffic and listen to sports radio for 25 minutes. Ok, this is how I get motivated. If I ride my bike to work and get a portable radio, I can listen to sports radio for 45 minutes instead. That is 20 minutes more I can educate myself on things like Coby Bryant's dirty laundry. Also, I might even get back to race wieght after all is said in done. I think you really got to focus on the benefits and not the bad stuff, like heat, it is just going to get hotter. I say get on your dam bike.

When I lack motivation to ride to work, I drive, and don't beat myself up about it. After a few days, of fighting traffic, I usually get a ride jones, and back I go. I've been in a cast for two months, so I got a HUGE Bicycle Jones, about now.

I find that passing cars at lights and parking by the front door are normally reward enough :p

I take pleasure in passing the Amish buggies. While I get their 19th century simplicity what I don't get is their eschewing of the greatest of 19th century developments...the bicycle. I used to think it was because of the real Old Order phobia about "trapped air" in the tires. Now I am more inclined to believe that they are just too cheap to buy a good bike.
Motivation had been an issue for me. I put a 42T chain ring on the front end to gain almost 15 gear-inches. My commute time on the Monocog is now the same as for my old roadie.
Loads more funner too.

You and me both. I assume it's apathy setting in. I've had the warning sings for it since I was--8 or so. Last week I didn't have exactly right bike for the conditions, tommorow it will be a lack of hydration or lack of rest from being here. And honestly I don't trust the drivers I see at 6 AM everyday with my skull.

it's easy for me. I leave my jeep at a friend's house, I've gotta ride 15km to pick it up. I've got no choice but to ride to work, or take the bus. And I hate the bus.

2 nice chilled mornings snapped me out of it. plus i blew out a tire on my roadie so i took the SS mtn bike. it's like a whole new commute. instead of fretting over sleeping drivers i got to tear through alleys and catch little bits of air off sidewalks/drops/etc.
i think it was boredom with my route
plus heat sucks

Forget gas prices for motivation. Look through the glass at the stupid, fat, lazy animals inside the boxes. I have nothing but contempt for them. I have tried, but I am not like them. We have nothing in common. It is like they are another species. You are not like them either. Look through the glass at them again. Do you see yourself in there? Now “that” is motivation.

True enough, but some of those people trapped in their vehicles might be able to ride circles around you. One never knows. This is my opinion but you should commute by bike because you can, you want to and/or you need to (can you liquorsicle?). Riding to work and judging people in cars to make yourself feel better seems like a real waste of an opportunity to simply enjoy riding your bike. If you live close enough to your job to ride to work often you're lucky, be happy about that. Or, ride around in angst muttering at "cagers" while evolving into a better species.... whatever floats your boat.
Back on topic, I have lost some motivation to ride to work as well. My long round trip, combined with copius amounts of post work MTB riding, has made it tough to get out of bed early enough for the long haul in to the cubicle of doom. The ride home is always so easy, if only I could wake up at work with my bike everyday  No issues with riding to do my errands though, I would rather ride around the city than drive any day.

Can you liquorsicle? (I don’t drink and drive. I “am” more evolved than that)
If you live close enough to your job to ride to work often you're lucky, be happy about that. (Actually I moved my whole family and myself closer to my job and actually changed my life instead of sitting around talking about how “lucky” other people are)

Don’t be so sensitive princess. You seem to have missed my point just because I stated it too graphically. I apologize. I did not mean everyone in a car falls into that category, (I drive and have two cars) but don’t act like you don’t see them on your way in. Your homework is to look for them tomorrow. They usually weigh in excess of 250 Lbs. There is only one of them driving a huge SUV usually a new Hummer at 75 mph through a residential neighborhood. They are terribly busy drinking a giant cup of cheap gas station coffee, touching up their make up, reading the paper, talking on the phone and stuffing even more food in their faces. They don’t let the fact that they really were not very good drivers before they started to multitask in the car bother them at all. They are in such a hurry that they barely have time to see who they ran over. Was that thump some guy on his way to work or some little kid walking to school?
And my boat floats just fine thank you.

jeep ran out of gas yesterday and I spent my gas money on dinner for a girl, so I had to ride to work today. great motivation!

Geez at least I wasn't that rough... Nice summary of my feelings, I can be way too long-winded sometimes :D
FWIW when I wrote "you" I meant people in general, and yeah, I know the types of drivers you mention and genuinely get your vibe (in general). It's great that you changed your lifestyle and it now allows for more ride time/less drive time - I'm honestly impressed and most people of a bicycle mindset would probably agree with that sentiment. It's just that crappy people (drivers) are a constant, maybe just chill out a little and go around them if you know what I mean.
Now, after all this BS I found some motivation to ride in next week. There's some newer trail on the way in I just found out about, and the 700x35s are stil on the 'cross bike so there's the motivation. It just means I get up at buttass early o'clock instead of half past buttass early o'clock. At least it's light out that early these days.

I only get to ride to work two days a week now. The motivation takes care of its self - I'm actually anxious to get up and ride now.
I did find it a bit more difficult to ride every day. When commuting by bike becomes part of the "daily grind," maybe it's just time to take a break for a while.

If I am lacking motivation I think about the alternatives. A train that people are packed into like sardines. A tram that I have to walk too far to catch and it takes forever. Or my car. Fuel prices, traffic jams, parking prices etc etc.The choice is easy all the while not turning into a fat bastard.

not sure if this has been mentioned yet, but try riding with someone to work. is there anyone in your area that might be interested in riding? that or get a new (or old) part, just as long as it's different, i always want to ride more when i've recently changed something.
