Okay,
So here I sit in KC - the Paris of the Prairies - a content history teacher to HS boys. Now, I get this unreal offer to go teach in London, England right? Okay, I got a house and a dog here in KC, and am debating about whether I move, leave my dog, miss out on some great single track here in town, or just stay put and miss out on living in Europe and potentially a great career move. What the hell do you guys think? I bet the single track in the UK is no Wisconsin man....

I've been teaching overseas since 2000. Though now I am ready to head back to the USA, I have no regrets coming overseas. I'll probably do one more year here in Venezuela (at least).
Also, Europe is highly coveted with some in the overseas teaching community. I'd go for it. You won't regret it.

What the hell do you guys think? I bet the single track in the UK is no Wisconsin man.... No... it's much much wetter and often muddier or paved with stones like Roman roads. If you think you could live in Seattle then the UK would be worth considering.
Have a visit to http://www.singletrackworld.com/ and join the forum and ask around about the weather and cost of living in London. It would make New York look like a cheap place to get a apartment.

Very very true. On craigslist they put apt prices at the weekly level. Insane man. Thanks for the tip.
Europe is indeed coveted man. And, I don't have kids yet... so, it may be a good move. I think it would be great in terms of applying to grad school and such....
But, the dog thing is killing me man. I got this little bastard when he was 3 weeks old man... not even weaned from his mother. He is no doubt my best friend in the world man.

Don't leave him, check with relevant authorites on the U.K. about bringing him with you ,if you are going for more than 1 year ,it will be worth it,one of the locals at the pub The Budgie and I drink in lived in England for 10 years ,took his dog with him ,there was some level of quarantine time ,but they were both better for it ,you know what it's like when you have to leave him behind for a day or two,sos a month or so in quarantine is not going to betoo much for you both, good luck.

So have you ever lived anywhere else? That is one bold mo fo move if you have never been away from where you currently reside. And like the other members are saying, that dream job/opportunity better come with a serious increase in pay because the housing market over there is brutal.
That being said...take the hound and give it a shot!! You can always come back if it doesnt work out...but that nagging feeling of "what if" will haunt you forever.

Here's the straight poop (http://www.defra.gov.uk/animalh/quarantine/pets/index.htm) on dogs immigrating to the UK

Housing or housing allowance is usually included in an overseas teaching package.

Aside from possibly finding new places to ride that you really like, living out of the country (or just visiting for that matter) will do at least two things: it will give you a broader perspective about the world at large, from which all Americans would benefit, and it very well make you appreciate what you have right here at home and be less inclined to take some things for granted.
I friend of mine went through the situation with his dog that you are facing when he left the country for a while. He was able to find family members to watch the pooch. It worked out fine.

Sounds like it is harder to take a pooch to England than for an illegal to come to the USA.

While the UK isn't my fave spot in the EU, it is just a quick train ride from Paris. Provence, Tuscany, Greece, Rome, etc. are all just a quick (and cheap) jet flight away. Food sucks there, cars drive on the wrong side and gasoline costs more than Bordeaux. But that's part of the fun: you can explore a new culture while gaining an appreciation for life in the USA. Five years passes fast..don't miss the opportunity. And there is decent MTB riding (don't mind the knee deep mud). Life is short, take a chance.

Hey guys,
Thanks for all the responses. I am passing on the job though. Just cannot leave the dog, and could not live w/ him and my wife in a cramped $2,000 a month studio apartment in some sleezy section of london. In spite of all the benefits, just can't do it. Just thought you'd want an update. Besides, it isn't all that bad here in the Paris of the Prairies....

Here´s my favorite college joke...
Q: Why the Greenie cross the road?
Greenie = student of Evergreen State College (WA). My former boss was a greenie. He wasn´t amused at the answer.
(Maybe 2dumbforgears knows the answer)
