Hey all,
Alright, call me un-American, but frankly I prefer wine to beer. On the few occassions I treat my friends & myself to a drink or two, I'll go for a glass of wine and big Italian meal over anything else. However, I've been told by the numerous German tourists that run through my little back o' beyond claim that Hefeweizen (aka Wheat Beer) is supposed to taste worlds better than standard pilsners, ales and lagers. (One man stated, "If you like [ales], you'd like cough syrup just as well!"). Regardless of what ze German said, I actually do like some forms of beers, such as Alaskan Amber and Rolling Rock. Any suggestions for a good beer or hefeweizen? Suggestions for a good, flavorful red wine would also be greatly appreciated.

Try Michigan's Nut Brown Ale, one of my favorites. I'm also partial to Lindemann's Reds, especially their Cabernet.

Victory Sunrise is a nice Hefeweizen. Other Victory beers to try are the Victory Storm King and Hop Devil. I also highly recommend the Stone Ruination IPA.

There is always the Widmer. It is nationally sold (through Busch), but it is brewed by Widmer in Portland. I am not a big wheat beer fan, but I believe it to be a reasonable example of the breed.

I did their drewery tour a few weeks ago.

If you like Rolling Rock, you might try an I.P.A.(India Pale Ale). Various Microbreweries make them. Sierra Nevada IPA comes to mind.

Not a big fan of wheat beers. What I REALLY like is Dogfish Head IPA. Oh yeah, and the Raison d'etra I had last night weren't bad neither. Hold on to your socks, though. That stuff is 8% alkyhaul. Don't know if you can get it in Montana though.

Do they sell Shiner way out there in the boondocks? Their hefewiezen seemed okay the few times I've had it.

New Glarus Brewery makes some of the best beers on earth. It comes from a small town in southern Wisconsin and everything they make is awesome. Their Spotted Cow (wheat) is my favorite, but you can't go wrong with Naked or Fat Squirrel.

Their copper kettle beer is phenomenal. Got some at the La Grange general store after riding the southern kettle moraine forest earlier this year. Check out their site (http://www.newglarusbrewing.com/).

I've been drinking red wine mostly the last couple of years. I'm especially partial to South Australian reds. Cabernet,Shiraz and blends ahhh I love em all.
Favorite beer would have to be Little Creatures Pale Ale from Western Australia. Wunspeed would know this fine brew. I can vouch for for wunspeeds fave. Coopers is a great beer. Hmmm might go get a lil creatures from the fridge right now

If you like wine, try the Allagash beer that is aged in red wine barrels. Can't remember the exact name for it, but it is an altered version of their belgian triple. Also their Curieux is delicious (triple that has been aged in jim beam barrels). Try a good barley wine (it's a style of beer) Victory's Old Horizontal is rather tastey. If you want a decent wheat beer Stoudt's Weizen is actually really good. I'm not much of a wheat beer fan but i do enjoy that. Also look into some of the lambic styles. Not the lindenmans though. They are uber sweet, and personally I can't really stomach them. Their are some other good lambic styles out there though such as a gouze. Also try the Ommegang Three Philosophers. It's a Belgian style quad with a hint of lambic kriek in it. And then my favorite summer beer is the Saison DuPont Farmhouse style ale, great year round but superd in the summer in my opinion. Also I would research Belgian style beers. They can be very funky and unique and have quite a range of flavors and aroma's, especially when they warm up a little bit.

My "new" favorite beer is Rogue's Brutal Bitter. Searching for the good ones is the fun of it. If you have an LBS (Local Beer Shop :D ) that carries a wide variety of micros, some will let you "mix a six".

I'm currently drinking the Anchor Brewing Co's Liberty Ale. I don't know anything about it or the company. I just asked the lady to pick me up something I hadn't had before, and this is what I landed. I'm enjoying it, but I don't think it would be the one to convert you from wine.

Brooklyn Brown Ale is good... Sam Adams Cherry Wheat (I think?) might be a good choice.

Oi! the Nascar reference is a damn yankee thing meaning shyte that they promote the crap out of so they can sell a shyteload of it even tho it tastes like catpiss:eek: and no real beer drinker will touch it anyway!!!!In the US i believe it is budwieser in Oz it's either VB or Fosters(the common word spread about Fosters is that it is pushed hard at OS markets coz no-one in OZ drinks it:D) Oh! And we DO have Nascar and our own version using Mum & Dad type Aussie cars.

Well done on your purchase, enjoy!! Just one question tho'..Have you ever ridden a motorcycle? If so,where was the front brake lever? Why should it be any different for a bike?Contradict myself ,I may,but I do agree that we drive on the incorrect side of the road.....

Have you ever ridden a motorcycle? If so,where was the front brake lever? Why should it be any different for a bike?
Yes I have. T'was my principle means of transport for a few years. And indeed, the front brake lever was on the right hand side.

As to why I prefer my setup on bicycles to be right-rear/left-front, I can't speak for anyone else, but here's my take:

On a motorcycle, the rear brake is foot-actuated, yes? So when you want to slow down some, you press with your foot, just like a coaster brake. (Or a fixie. ) The hands are not even being used at this point.

Now if you want some serious slowing down, you add a little front brake. Initial slowing/stopping reflex is to use the right hand.

Okay, say you want to haul 'er down NOW! You choke the living shit out of your right-hand lever, dropping speed rapidly. You don't want to kill the motor, so you next squeeze the left-hand lever to disengage the clutch. All of these reflexes transferred intuitively and seamlessly from motorcycle to real bike, whether coaster brake, brakeless fix, fix with one brake (lever on right), fix with two brakes (rear-right/front-left) or freewheel with two brakes.

Shake I must admit I'm a bit uninformed about any kind of special reserve. The missus picked up a bottle for me last week at some specialty store. We were on vacation and I actually stayed in the car with the kiddies as she shopped. She also picked up a Dogfishhead 90 minute IPA. I drank both of them in succession. It was in the words of Borat....."Very niiiiicccccccccce"

Now she bought me this beer on a whim and it had also been recommended by the proprietor of the store. I've read about this beer before but I'd never tasted it. It was very good. I enjoyed it much more than the DFH 90 but then again they are two different beers.

The grand reserve has a blue label as well, except in nice writing it says "grand reserve" underneath "Chimay". If you like the 90 min IPA, try the 120 min IPA, just dont drive if you drink more then one cause its around 20" ABV, but it is might tasty. Dogfishhead puts out some quality stuff. Since i'm only 30 min from Delaware I see a lot of dogfishhead stuff. I said it earlier in this thread i believe, but if you like chimay, try and find Westmalle dubbel or trippel, or Delerium Tremens (easy to spot cause they have pink elephants all over it) or I just discovered a new belgian brewery called La Chouffe, delicious stuff.

OTB, there is a beer out there for everyone haha, and some beers taste better cold because warmth brings out the flavor in many of them and all those beers that should be drank cold should never be drank warm because the warmth would bring out the bad flavor. But like i said earlier, if you like then you like it and thats all that matters. As my dad always said, thats why there is vanilla and chocolate
