Such an amazing thing... Googled right down to the friken trails we rode last weekend! wow. Had I done this prior to the ride I could have saved some grief at where-a-bouts at one point on the south rim trail... Great ride btw....

Too many damn trees to see the trails in Mohican State Park, Ahiah.

Nothing a good wild fire won't solve.

Too many trees? This is less of a problem than it was a few years ago. Check the web for LiDAR imagery for your area. Combine that with software from Global Mapper and you may be able to get a ridiculously clear image of the terrain along your favorite trail.

A bit of an explanation: the image above is a very densely forested area in western Washington (we have a few trees here). Good LiDAR essentially cuts through the vegetation and yields an excellent representation of the ground surface. The image clearly shows kettles (circular depressions created by the melting of glacial ice masses deposited in a sand and gravel outwash terrace), two side-by-side landslides at the upper side of the terrace, a gravel pit at the left, and several logging roads. Cool stuff. With the right GIS package you can also develop extremely accurate topographic maps using the digital elevation model. You can shade the maps with different colors to show different slope inclinations if you want to plan your climbs and descents.
