Okay,

I've replaced my bb and my cranks, greased the pedals, and I still get this mechanical clicking noise when I am pedalling. I think I have finally pinpointed the click / creak - the free wheel. I have a cheap - $20 - shimano free wheel w/ a size 18 cog on it. The whole free wheel seems a bit loose. Should I just replace? I don't see how you can really tighten... should I get a more expensive one?

I had a similar experience recently. Ditto on the greasing, tightening, etc. My freewheel also felt loose and emitted a clunking noise rather than a clicking noise. I replaced my craptastic 18t (not Shimano) freewheel with a White Industry 16t and the mystry noise went away. Also, the White engages immediately and is smooth as silk...unlike the crap I was using.

You know, in reading this thread I am reminded that the single most striking thing to me about fixed gear is its utter silence. Just sayin'...

Just the hum of tires on pavement, and the expletives of folks you sneak up on. Haven't tried fixed single track, so I don't know so much about that.

I also run an inexpensive Shimano singlespeed freewheel. I have found that its noise level is a function of the lube that I use. I gave it a shot of a very runny purple chain lube a while back and it quieted down quite a bit (the lube was a free sample size and I tossed the container after finishing the lube - can't remember the name).

Invest in an ENO freewheel and be done with it...smooth, serviceable, and poochy.

I concur, an ENO. You'll likely never need another. Love mine. Catches immediately, is solid, and dependable.

Third the ENO. You'll spend easily $160 on cheap freewheels over lifespan of one $80 ENO.

I fourth the ENO. Though you will trade the mystery noise for a different buzzy noise when you coast. Just keep the crank cranking to avoid this & you can pretend to be on fixed until you are ready to gradiate with honors like Dave who's now a professor at Fixedgearniversity.
