How much is your investment in commuting? I added things up on my main comm bike, a Nishiki International touring bike. I paid $20 for the bike from a bike recycling project about 3 years ago. Amazingly, I now have $300 tied up in it - Tires, lights, rack, pedals, fenders, and other little stuff. Most of my other bikes are similar - low initial investment, but the other stuff adds up quickly!
On the other hand, $100 per year is pretty cheap transportation to work!!

Oh my investment would be thousands of dollars.

But if you commute all year round, I hope you have some nice Winter clothes, which must be part of the investment?

just totting a couple of the bigger items:

HID light $300
Lake boots $180
Winter tights X2 $100 (on sale from $200)
PI Amfib gloves $60

Of course all this stuff gets used for fun as well as commuting....

Hard to say how much I've invested over the years. My main commuter is my fixed crosscheck which is my only 'road' bike I have so it sees double duty. I'll use my track bike on nice days too.

It can cost a good bit to get started but theres always cheapskate ways to make it work too. Cycling clothes are a bit overated for commuting if you ask me. At most I'm out there for an hour each way so cold temps are doable with a mix of civilian and performance wear. Same with summer.

Anyone can survive an hour in cotton no matter what the weather is. Longer than that and I'll reach for a jersey but won't leave the Dickies at home.

Here's a pic of it, waiting for a ship to go under the lift bridge.

davkatreb, one of the advantages of living in Canada, you don't have the firearms expenses (not yet, anyways)

That, and you've got "free" health care. Well I suppose it's not really free; someone has to pay for it. And you could die while waiting to get treated, but at least it's "free". But not really.

I dunno. 9-2-5, some clips & straps, lights... New water bottles... Needle & thread for the manufacture of my own 'knickers,'

*shrug* I think I'm only in it for about 500 bucks right now? If I had been driving the entire time since I bought the bike, I'd have spent about $832 more in gas, plus wear & tear on the truck... I'd say I'm coming out ahead.

Magazine's not clips. Clips load magazines, magazines load firearms.

Clips also load first world war rifles (and a few second world war)

Clips load non-detachable magazines also. Just because it don't come off the gun, don't mean it aint a mag. :D

Edited to add;
Do you play first base or catcher? No? Then it's a glove, not a mitt. Just because you're on inline skates, doesn't mean you're wearing Rollerblades. And there are no oh's in a phone number. It's a ZERO, idiot!

Sorry. End of rant. :D

I have a hard time figuring out what's a commuting investment and what's just clothes I wear or gear I need. For example, I have probably $150 tied up in my zillion different types of socks.

Commuting investment ... Hmmmm ....

Well, I scavenge most of my stuff, I get plenty of exercise using it, and its a cheaper hobby than hookers and coke ... I don't think I need to justify it anymore than that :p

My expenses haven't gotten too high yet. I still have some winter clothes investments to make. I try to keep it as simple as I can. I don't like too many things keeping my wallet empty.

HK USP Compact, .45, hollowpoints, two extra magazines, plus Concealed Weapons Permit. That failing, two stainless steel waterbottles that pack a wallup as well, and U lock appropriately positioned so it can be reached and used to remove the side view mirrors on vehicles that tresspass into the bike lane;)

Concealed Weapons Permit.
Ain't gonna happen. You think you live in a blue state? Trust me, you don't know dick.

Here in the Peoples' Republic of Maryland, we ain't got shit for rights; at least we few law-abiding citizens who mostly just pay our taxes and go about our business. Want proof? Some assclown who molested a seven year old girl got off because the court couldn't find an interpreter for whatever language he spoke in his shithole of an African village. He spoke English plenty good; even got a degree. But no, some left-leaning pansy let him off. If you come to to Maryland and you got kids, better watch 'em close. Mustafah the Molester will be, I'll tell you what.

Permits? So much shitpaper. The Constitution trumps that nonsense. And even if it don't, I'd rather be judged by twelve than carried by six.

I beg to differ, I do know Dick, and he certainly should not be one handling firearms ;)
