Bartman,
As a dedicated weekend warrior I'm fairly positive my fitness levels would not be sufficient. But I've heard about this race. Am I confused or is this an event where orienteering comes into play? What is this thing all about? Its in State College, right?

Worry not about orienteering. This is a 101-mile single-day mountain bike race with 11,000' of climbing, some of the greatest downhills you can ride, beautiful ridge tops, and hours and hours of love.
It starts and ends in Coburn, PA about 25 miles northeast of State College, PA and goes through three counties (Mifflin, Centre, and Huntington), two state forests (Rothrock and Bald Eagle), several state parks (Penn Roosevelt, Bear Meadows, Whipple Dam, Alan Seeger, Greenwood Furnace, and Little Poe).
Needless to say, it is my favorite ride of the year. This will be my fifth 101.

ironspoke,
What you are thinking about is the "Wild 100" in Slatyfork, WV. it is a 100k "pick your own route" race. That is where the orienteering comes into play. It is also one of the most fun races I have ever done! If you are interested contact Elk River Touring Center in WV.
The Wilderness 101 is in State College, PA and is 101miles not kilometers.

I'm backing off my race schedule a good bit this year, so I won't make it to the 101. Did enjoy my past trips there, with the possible exception of last year brush with heat stroke (did manage to finish, albeit over 12 hours in the saddle).
Checkpoint #2 ( below) is located on one of the paved roads that are common in the first third of the race (after checkpoint #4 my arse was cursing the rocks and wishing for a stretch of pavement).
