Soon I will be in possesion of a new Redline Monocog Frame. I am switching over a lot of parts from my old singlespeed and will be running my Vbrakes. It has disc tabs, and I may swicth to disc brakes in the future. But before I do the I plan to build a set of SS wheels and was wondering should I build:

1. Flip flop rear hub with fixed/free
2. Do disc wheels with rim brake rims
3. Disc hub on the front only

I think I might want to try fixed off road but was curious to see what others thought of this.

I await the collective wisdom...

Do disc hubs on the front and rear. That way if you want to go fixed, you can simply flip the wheel around and use a disc-mount-mounted fixed cog (that's a mouthful).

If you think you will go to disc brakes in the future, then you will save some cash by building your wheels with the disc hubs.

Despite davka's considered opinion, if you are planning on riding fixie on real trails (not RR conversions) you're being silly. On the other hand, I'd love to have the pedal concession at your house when you do try...:D

Funny you should mention that....

But didn't a team from Dirt Rag do a 24 hour race last year on fixed gears? But true, I probably won't be doing much fixed on real trails, especially here in central PA.

I'd go with disc hubs fore and aft. Got 'em on the Monocog, along with disc tabs.

Still running the stock vbrakes, but I've got the option. Plus that Boone cog looks to be the very thing. I reckon it would be the best of both worlds, to have the option of fixed gear. Don't let some misinformed pinhead scare you off; fixed ain't that hard to learn and is highly addictive. Plus, with a fixed/free setup you have options out the wazoo. Double-double on the free side, maybe, and good chainline on the fixed side? The mind boggles.

I think I am gonna build up a set of Surly New Hubs, with a flip flop rear fixed/free to start with. This will be my first set of wheels and I would like a little practice before building the disc set. I know a little more money, but when I build the disc wheels I want to use disc specific rims.

The fixed gear off road thing just sounds like too much fun. Plus I tend to ride on the road quite a bit with my mountain bike, along with numerous dirt roads. I think the fixed gear will spice those rides up.:D

Of course I take my SS road bike on many short sections of gravel road to connect rides together. I should just build a cross bike too. Too many bikes to build and only so much time.

Personally, I would run disc brakes up front, with a disc hub on the rear, with V-brakes. Hear me out. With a disc rear and V-brakes you could actually run it as a flip flop and still have brakes when you went single. And as someone already mentioned, you could run two chain rings up front and a cassette/disc hub in the rear. That would allow you to have a free trail and road gear, and a fixed gear of your choice. What can I say, I like options.

That Boone cog is nice... I was looking around the net and thought it would be cool to build up a set of Surly's Jim Brown Disc hubs. The frame is brown and with those hubs it would be a cool ride. I would spend a little more initially but like everyone has mentioned, cheaper in the long run. Also, Rob, I never thought about breaking if I did flip the disc hub with the Boone cog. I think we may have a winner... :D
