So I have managed to sell off a few bikes and bought two new ones. Here are my initial thoughts on my two new bikes:
Salsa Casseroll:
Specs:
Salsa Casseroll frame/fork
Salsa Cromoto steel stem
Profile alloy drop bars
Salsa seatpost
Dura Ace bar con shifters
Cane Creek brake levers
105 brakes
XT rear der
105 front der
105 hubs laced to Open Pro rims w/ 28c rubber
Brooks Professional saddle (circa 1975)
105 cranks/bb
SKS fenders
First Impression:
I really like the looks of this bike. Since selling my fixie, I needed a daily commuter and decided to build this up for that purpose. Good, durable, reliable equipment. My first ride was a late night pub crawl to dial in the fit. After failing miserably at this, but successfully getting very drunk, I got up at 6:00am the next morning (Saturday) and put in 60 miles with the local bike shop's Saturday morning ride. Bike feels a bit heavy. I am guessing 27lbs or so. In spite of that, I really like the ride. I think I am going to enjoy it for the long haul. Seems very comfortable, if not a bit short in the top tube. I plan to ride this on my attempt to do the entire length of the KATY trail (235 miles) on the last weekend of September.
Gary Fisher Ferrous 29'er:
Spec's:
Size M True Temper steel frame w/ eccentric bb
Reba Race 29" fork
SRAM X-9 rear der & shifters
XT front der
Bontrager cranks, bb, wheels, seatpost, stem, bars, saddle (switching to a Flite asap..this thing is BRUTAL), etc.
Avid BB7 brakes
First Impression:
This is my first 29'er. I will be converting to rigid ss as soon as the fork, cog and spacers arrive. I LOVE THE WAY THIS THING RIDES. Have only put in about 50 miles thus far, but it's sweet. Once it's converted to ss, I'm sure I'll like it even more, as I expect to take about 5 pounds or more off of it. My only complaint right now is that it's a bit heavy. Going w/ a Bontrager carbon rigid fork. The bike seems to roll effortlessly once up to speed. Climbs like a goat compared to my 26" hardtail. I think I will be very happy with this thing.
Overall, my "stable" went from seven bikes to four, which makes both me and my wife happier.
