Curiosity is getting the best of me . . . again. When racing or preparing to race for a ss class, how do you train? Do you train on your ss or use a geared bike to increase fitness? It is true that improvement comes from overload and then recovery, but if you are on the same gear every time, how can you overload after the previous recovery cycle? Maybe just use a bigger gear? Maybe more hilly rides?

I don't think one trains to SS... just ride.;)

It's hard to train for anaerobic capacity, you just need loads of glycogen in the leg muscles. And on any hilly course if you're going to be racing fast on flats and downhills, you'll be anaerobic going uphills. Add in a lot of strength building weight work, squats, core/ab strength, and upper body and arm strength for pulling up on the bars.

yeah, hands, arms, hands, arms, hands, arms. it's the only part of me that gets overworked and sore now on a long hard SS ride.

Yes grasshopper, when you can tie the aluminium handlebars in a knot it will be time to leave the temple.

I'm racing in the SM100 this year (next weekend actually) singlespeed. My training has consisted of mostly riding around town from bar to bar on my singlespeed road bike and an occasional trail rides on one of my two singlespeed mtn bikes. The most important factor is carbo loading. Not all carbs are created equal. There are good carbs and bad carbs. You can easily tell the difference between the two. Good carbs taste good as the name implies. Good carbs include beer, pizza, pasta, & potatoes w/lots of cheese, butter, & bacon bits.
I have gained 15 lbs since last years SM100. I'm hoping that that's enough to fuel my body over the 100 mile course. I found out yesterday that Floyd Landis will be racing this year. He's never raced this course before, so I figure I have a pretty good chance of spanking his ass, especially if he rides a geared bike.

I read that he just did one of these off road centuries about a week or two ago, the Leadville 100 I believe, and crashed very badly on his recently replaced hip. He was on a geared bike, BMC of coarse.

I hope he doesn't try to use that as an excuse when I blow by him on Hanky Mtn.

What gear are you running? I ran 32:19 (29'er) last year and was pretty happy with that.

ride your ass off on you SS. Use your geared MTB or road bike for recovery day rides.
Even though I do more racing on my geared bike then on my SS I like to do more of my training on my SS because it makes me strong when I am weak.

just do what ever you can as much as you can without burning yourself out(besides eating and tv dummy), its about fun. mix it up, i started running too, and my calves and hams are much stronger.
