Why is WD40 a bad idea?
Tell me quick cuz I have whole can and a sticky chain.

WD40 is too wet and won't be cleaned off your chain well enough, and will attract a TON of dirt. Please please please don't do it. Go down to a bike shop and buy some drip lube (no spray...) then drip it on and wipe it all off again. You really only need lube on the inside of the rollers of your chain. If your chain is sticky, it's probably that waxy coating on new chains, and it will wear off with a lube job or two.
How did you wind up in Brussels? I lived there for a year or so after college...

Err, no.
WD, stands for water displacement. It'll cleean all the gunk off of your chain, but will not leave any useful lube left behind. So you could use WD40 rinse with water, and then re-lube.
Personally I would use something less toxic and more environmentally freindly. Finish line citrus degreaser....?

As usual this forum is most helpful. As I mentioned in another post, I can't communicate well with my LBS. I should manage to get some decent chain lube though. How did you wind up in Brussels? I lived there for a year or so after college...
I am in the military, currently working at the "Death Star" aka NATO HQ.:)

it's also something like 50% solvent. great for cleaning lube off of your chain. not what you want. it doesn't even penetrate rust all that well...
a bottle of bike shop chain lube will only cost you a couple of dollars, my medium sized bottle lasts me most of a season.

Add this to the long list of reasons why WD-40 is so evil:

Actually, having enjoyed that demonstration, I now recommend WD-40 without reservations.
You have a whole can? Go for it, but have a buddy with a video camera - pretty please?
Come to think of it, I likely have 3 or 4 cans of the tasty elixir rolling around in the car with all my other gear. Can anyone say, "Unintentional suicide bomber?"
