I've got a new Specialized Stumpjumped FSR Comp that i bought on Aug 8th, so I've only had it for 2.5 weeks. I ride very very often, almost every day (the perks of working from home at whatever hours i feel like), and I've run into a few issues like I've pointed out in the avid juicy 5 thread.

Today while i was riding the rear tire blew out. They are Specialized Resolution Pro tires. It wasn't a sharp rock or anything that punctured it. When it happened it was just a small log on the trail that i was hopping over, so it was the pressure that made it burst. I do ride often, as i mentioned, and somewhat fast and hard. I'm also a big guy, 6'1" 235lbs, so i realize its not out of the question that a tire could wear out fast, but I'm wondering if that is common? I never had a problem on my old bike that i rode for about 2 years, and that was a cheap bike with cheap tires.

Are the tires worn out or did you just pop a tube?

Two and a half weeks?

Cant be worn out, can it? Maybe a ripped sidewall or a blown tube. Should be repairable. I cant believe the tread could be worn out that quick even for a big guy who rides a lot.

Wet tires will cut or slice much easier than when dry. I cant say I've ever actually worn out a tire, either most of the tread gets chewed off from rocks, or I damage them somehow.

Sorry, i didn't mean the tire was worn out. No, the treads were actually in very good shape. It was the sidewall of the tire that popped open. Not just the tube, the tire itself was ripped. Just from looking at it you could tell it wasn't punctured or sliced open, it was a jagged ripped/frayed edge that was blown open from the inside.

I brought the bike up to the LBS where i bought it, i was going to get the free tune up anyway that comes with the bike after so many miles. The service guy there looked at the tire and said it was definitely odd, and said I'll get it replaced on warranty. Sweet deal.

I have had poor luck with Specialized tires and their sidewalls cutting really easily. I think the last time I brushed up against a dandelion and poof, cut sidewall. Maybe not that bad, but pretty close. It seems like Specialized uses fairly thin casings to save some weight. The tires are really supple and have good weight, but they just didn't last for me, especially in rocky conditions. I would try something else when you wipe these out, unless you can just keep getting them to warrantee new ones for you.

I believe you never had the pleasure of using Hutchinson Mosquitos. The tire with the most fitting name ever, as they had the average lifespan of a mosquito. The only tire that I know off you could wear on ONE ride.

Soft sidewalls make for a light, supple tire. But they tore apart very easy.

I adored the Roll X pros till the sidewalls blew out. Even the UST's did it. Certain tyres do it cause of the thin walls and the weave direction. The weave on Specialized tyres is like a panaracer that has an angled[45degree] sidewall weave. I blew out a nevigal that was converted with stans. I replaced it with the UST version I wanted originally as they were sold out. The UST model has a thick sidewall and is strong. I have used nothing but UST tyres on UST rims for 2 years now and no blow outs and no flats. The last tyre i took off my #2 ride was a 2.3 vert pro UST. It had at least 15 thorns and various spikey things sticking up inside the tyre. The Stan's was all but obsorbed and I use 2 cups in each tyre.
