Is it possible to get a new set of cross country wheels for around $400? Something fairly light but still kinda sturdy? If so any recommendations? I ride fairly rocky and rooty terain around philadelphia if that makes a difference. Thanks!

Mavic crosstrails are a little bit over the 400 mark. they're really sturdy.

Mavic Crossrides would be a good choice, and you can find them for less than $400. Also, you might even be able to get a decent set of custom wheels built up for right around $400. Rims + spokes about $160, $50 for the build, leaves around $200 for your hub choice. If you can go to about $450 total, you could build a really nice wheelset.

Depending on where you're located, go see Sean or Scott at Bean's Bikes in Paoli. They'll hook you up.

And machine built Shimano XT/Mavic 717 wheels (http://www.pricepoint.com/detail/14238-365_MAVXT5-3-Parts-75-Wheelsets/Shimano-XT-M756-Disc-Wheelset-w_-Mavic-717-Rims.htm) are under $250.

we just got a fsa set and it was handbuilt very well. xc-300 i think, and they were pretty affordable, pretty sturdy too. might have given the wrong name though. disk and rim brake.

Handbuilt 32 spoke 3-cross wheels are fanatastic, and tend to hold up way better than most dedicated wheelsets. Machine built ones can be found fairly cheap, but they just aren't quite the same, though you could get a good mechanic to tension balance them, and that would help.

I second what Rocky said. Leaves you $150 for tires, a good saddle & some beers. :)

You can get hand built XT/717 wheels for about $250. And Universalcycles is got Hope XC hubs laced to 717s (hand built) for $360. I've got a wheelset built built Universal and I've never had an issue with them. True like the first day, after a whole season on my rigid singlespeed.
